Whenever I want to piss her off, I call her "African American" she usually threatens to "cut me" lol  She has a Jamaican GF that I have gone out with a couple of times, my buddy (who is lilly white) and I have a good time getting both of them going that way. Testy, testy. lmao

BTW For any idiot, politically correct morons here that might not get the humor, although they are both black, neither of them are either "African" or "American" they are respectively Bahamian and Jamaican, not "African American" but dumb white Americans like to lump all black people together as one homogenous group which of course is definitely not the case.

I actually prefer overt racism to the sissy, sneaky kind of closet racism that the PC crowd, especially white liberals tend to exhibit. Our birdbrained friend from P&R fits that description.

I can deal with overt racism, you can see it, deal with it and in most cases overcome it. It's the cowardly, closet racists that are the worst, they will never utter an ethnic slur, but they would never dream of associating with "those people". They hide their racism in the shadows and you can't ever deal with it.

I really hate these anti defamation groups, and I inwardly groan every time I hear someone complain about some benign comment that some idiot like a Jesse Jackson or this Asian group try to turn into a racial war. I wish that more black people would reject the Al Sharptons of the world the same way that I reject these Asian PC groups, These people are the problem not the solution.

Sorry, it's not that simple.  

"Orientalism" refers to a period in the 19th century when European cultures developed the concept of "The Other" - i.e. eastern cultures - via artistic depictions that portrayed the East in an unflattering, usually condescending manner. Thus, connotations surrounding the word "Orientals" are negative ones. When that word was used then, it was to express that Asians were Others, they were Different, and they were Not Like Us. Though I'm sure many people continue to use the term now with no ill intent, it still resonates the wrong way, especially in America because I, being Asian, am just as American as any white person in this country; being "Other-ized" is an unpleasant feeling. For example, would you call a black person a "negro"? Probably not. Language does not exist in a vacuum. You have to understand the context behind it before you judge why something is "non-PC.

The word simply means "eastern" and carries none of the context of the word you cited.  Even the word "negro" for many years was simply the descriptive word for blacks, but because it came from a particular time was rejected.  But it's still used by the United Negro College Fund, a rather large organization. And then there's "colored," which is similarly out of favor today.  Except that it's used by the NAACP: The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
So, in general, things are a bit more complicated in the real world.
Now on to the debate about whether the Washington Redskins should change their name to, uh, what?  The Washington Native Americans?  Can't call them Indians, you know, because they object to that as well.

Yes, I know that Oriental and Orientalism are technically two different things :-) However, I'm talking about association here, and why the word "Oriental" has an unpleasant aftertaste because it was often used in a patronizing matter towards those of Asian descent.  

It's true that words like "Negro" are still being used in the ways you've mentioned with seemingly no ill effect, but then we're getting into the territory of *who* is "permitted" (and I use that word loosely, obviously) to use some words, and why it's uncouth for others to use the same words, i.e.  reclaiming of words by minority groups which were once meant to marginalize them, thereby reassigning power etc etc etc. That, I think, is an entirely separate conversation

I do understand where you're coming from, and that it's not all about literal meanings.  I used "oriental' for years, and without any derogatory intent, until informed by my daughter is was considered insulting.  From my perspective, I considered that ludicrous and a classic example of political correctness run amok.  But, out of respect, I don't use the term any more.
BTW, the same issue holds true for non-racial terms. For example, it is now impermissible to refer to someone with mental deficiency as "retarded."  And that term was, in its day, a PC improvement on the old terms of "idiot" or "moron."  And so it goes.  In my view, people are just far too sensitive.

Speaking as a person with slanted eyes, I use the words Oriental and Asian almost interchangebly, and I almost never use the term African American, I feel that using hyphenated words to describe different "types" of Americans is divisive and I refuse to play along.

BTW I rarely if ever use the term "retard" to describe someone with a true mental handicap, that policy does not extend to people who are simply stupid. I was also called chink, jap, gook, dink, and every other asian racil slur that you can think of. (I still am at times, but now only by my friends), Oriental is hardly a slur, It might be a bit dated, the PC crowd has somehow convinced everyone that Oriental is racist, just like Negro is somehow racist, but just like Negro is simply the Spanish word for black, the Spanish word oriente simply means east. How you get racism out of that is beyond me, but maybe I have seen enough real racism in my life to not bother sweating the small stuff.

Of course since you are hot, I can call you anything you want me to, even if you are wrong about the word oriental :) BTW I am a bit older than you, ok quite a bit older, I have experienced real racism in my lifetime, please do us all a favor and just enjoy the victories that my generation fought for, and don't look for hidden meanings where there are none. That's what keeps racial wars burning, and there are many people who have a vested interest in keeping the races at war with each other, Don't let the Al Sharptons and Jesse Jacksons of the world win.

I think you misunderstood my meaning when I was discussing Orientalism vs. Oriental, but I clarified in an additional post (see above).

And I also never said it was a slur in the realm of chink, jap, etc, but that doesn't make the historical context behind it a positive one. I agree with you when you say it's merely dated, which is why it probably shouldn't be used in common discussion, same as "negro." The technical definitions for these words aren't the crux of the issue, it's the associations we carry with them.

And trust me, I do look at my country today with gratitude towards past generations for fighting for what I now get to enjoy, but it would be naive to suggest that just because you experienced worse in your generation, that the continued prejudices that still occur today are therefore less worth fighting against. I too have been called all those same names, and worse; this country is not post-racial by any means.  I don't look for hidden meanings. If someone calls me a jap and says I should learn English or go back to my country (and yes, that has happened to me), that's not "looking for hidden meanings." That is straight up racism. And if someone uses words like "Oriental" or "negro" out of simple ignorance and not malicious intent, then I try to discuss why they are bad choices to use in conversation.

Fighting outright racism is a worthwhile endeavor, correcting people over trivial matters only serves to inure them to real racism, especially when a large percentage, myself included, don't have even the slightest issue with the term Oriental.

What happens when you nit pick over issues of political correctness is that your audience grows tired of you taking offense at the slightest perceived slight. I can't tell you how many times I have been corrected for using the term "black" usually from white people I might add. I have even had PC idiots try to tell me that my friends GF should be referred to as "African American" when she is neither from African, nor is she American, She was born in, and is still a citizen of the Bahamas, and rightfully considers herself Bahamian, but does that stop the PC police? Of course not, they are obsessed over labels, and I implore you not to do the same, save your energy for people who deserve your ire, don't waste time on people who might just be a few years behind the times. Or people like me who use the term Oriental because I don't like the PC police telling me what to call myself

Who is fighting a battle?  

A commentor above expressed that he didn't understand why the word "Oriental" was "un-PC." I explained why it might be considered as such; I don't think that constitutes as fighting a battle. If someone a little behind on the times called me an Oriental in real life, and it was obvious they didn't mean any harm, I wouldn't say anything. However, when someone frames their comment the way the original commentor did, he is inviting a discussion on the topic.  

I don't care what terms you use for yourself. However, don't make the mistake of saying "Oh, I am a part of x minority group and I don't mind the usage of such-and-such term, so therefore it must be okay." I agree that often people take political correctness above and beyond what is necessary, only to produce the completely opposite effect of what they intended (their audience becoming numb to the issue entirely), but that is different than me discussing *why* a term may or may not be offensive to some when that is the very issue being addressed

You are speaking for all of "us" when you try to argue why some people might consider the word offensive. I am pointing out that not all, or even most asians consider it offensive, and the ridiculous standards that the PC polic attempt to hold us to.

Don't believe me, In ten or twenty years I guarantee you that terms like "Asian" and "African American" will be replaced and thse terms used today will somehow be deemed offensive by the PC police of tomorrow.

Oriente is simply the Spanish word for east. Asia is in the "east" lets not make any more of than that. Some uber sensitive PC nut job got it into his/her head that it was offensive and got the rest of the lemming to follow. The other most common argument against the use of the word Oriental is that Oriental refers to property, like a rug and that Asian refers to people, What a retarded argument, but it doesn't stop people from using it. There is enough real bigotry in this world, please let's stop sweating the small stuff.

It’s only in the past few years that “Indian” was even an ethnicity option on your TER profile. Before then, anyone born between Morocco and Mongolia was considered “Middle Eastern” by TER standards.

Indians don’t like to be called Persians. Persians don’t like to be called Arabs. Arabs don’t like to be called Turks. Turks don’t like to be called Kurds, and so on. Exotic can be a convenient shorthand.

As an Indian woman, I'm often told I'm "exotic" and depicted as exotic in American media. The Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra and Pitbull even made a video recently called "exotic". Because I came out my own description of my look. I will also agree that exotic is a look not a race or ethnicity. Two women from the same country can have quite different looks, one exotic and the other rather ordinary.
