So some of the good has been no worries about speeding traps -- or even tickets if you're not just doing something really stupid. Another has been parking. Some of the locations have been a bit tight on parking prior. Now, life is good.

So as things open one might anticipate some changes to both. Out and about this evening and I think I saw 3 cars getting tickets for speeding. I hope the parking lasts a bit longer ;-)

Of course I don't need to mention the ease of booking an appointment. With the exception on one I've pretty much been able to call and say I'm on way and will be there in 20 minutes and not have a problem, not that I actually every pushed it that short. That would be a bit rude I think in most cases. I would generally give the better part of the hour to allow preparation time.

out of the pandemic for me is . . . . after having lived through the plague, I totally get Italian Renaissance painting now where all the women just lay around with their tits out.

For those who are still alive.
And who are still in good health.
And who still have a job.
And who have a job that doesn't expose them to the coronavirus every day. And who aren’t worried about losing their job, or business, or home in the coming days or weeks, or even how they’ll feed themselves and their families.

I could go on, but by now you probably see that the bad side of the ledger is a lot bigger than stuff like easy parking and appointment booking.

In the beginning there weren't any. But now there are plenty of cops around with radar. Luckily, I've got a very good detector and an active anti-laser system, which let me take advantage of the less-crowded roads for a high-speed run every few days.

Lighten up a bit. I've been on the "more risks and dying" side and certainly on the everyone needs to make realistic assessments of the risks they both face directly and could be indirectly exposing others to. But that necessarily means no such thing as one size fits all.

But just seeing all the doom and gloom is as bad as the disease in many ways.

BTW, did you see the latest report about on of the vaccines that have been developed in Britain? The big concern is that now when they go to the trials they fear too few of the participants will even contract the infection to make for a viable test.

While is do think it is still to early to claim we fully understand the virus and what that means to day to day living there is certainly a grown amount of evidence that a lot of the harm we attribute to the virus may have been causes by how various public policies were implemented.

though only for limited private events like testing and track days with no spectators. But there's also a tentative schedule for amateur and pro races, depending on how things go. Just talked to a buddy who's hoping to race again this season in vintage events. Fingers crossed!

I could find on the effect of the bubonic plague on the Italian Renaissance.  The long and short of it is that, after they cleared out all of the DB's, the available wealth was spread out through fewer people, leading to luxury lives of excess.

Also led to the serf/peasant class getting more rights and better compensation, as there weren't enough warm bodies to meet labor demands.

Your thread title included the good and the bad of the pandemic. But your OP only covered some “good” things you’ve noticed. Nothing wrong with counting our luck/blessings and cheering on the efforts to develop vaccines. I do every day. But this is a situation that requires empathy for the millions of people for whom the bad far outweighs the good.

So my suggestion to you is, be mindful of that when you talk with others about how life is good because you can find a parking spot more easily.

PLEASE take Jensen's advice and just lighten the fuck up a little. There are dozens of threads with serious discussions about the COVID crisis, You don't need to piss on the one or two lighter hearted threads on the subject.

It's kind of like people getting upset by the word "retard" I know there are some really stupid people on this board, but any one who is actually mentally retarded (Yes, I still use that non PC term) is hardly going to be reading the TER discussion boards in order to be offended, although there are a few posters who are borderline. lol

So my suggestion to you, if jokes, tasteless or otherwise, offend you so much, maybe you should just skip over them.

very few peasants depicted in Italian Renaissance paintings, just occasional house servants (holding up saggy tits? lol).  Serfs don't make a very attractive picture.  On the other hand, surfs do, but there was very few of those as well.  Lol

As GaG did pick up on, the OP is largely to be humors and lighthearted take on the problems. We spend a lot of time being serious about the situations and how it relates to the P4P activities. That is good to do, there are serious problems that some have to confront.

Still, we could also end up with WWIII between the USA and China or North Korea could do something completely stupid like use on of their nukes on the USA with the view world pressure would prevent the USA from responding with nuclear weapons. It doesn't hurt to make jokes or funny cartoons about shit like that (like the of Spy v. Spy from Mad Magazine). Some times it's referred to as dark humor. Other times just British humor.

“It’s too soon.”

First, there was no indication that the OP was intended as a joke.  So it’s hard to skip over posts that aren’t clear as to intent. I could say, if you don’t like someone objecting to a post, just skip along. But, that’s not possible for you, is it.

But let’s assume, as you did, that it was a joke. Then I think the quote above comes into play.  Hundreds of thousands dead, nearly 100,000 in the USA alone.  Millions infected, many of those in rough shape in hospitals. Millions more affected by those deaths and illnesses.  Then there’s the millions who aren’t sick but in tough situations from this mess.  This wasn’t about flinging out a term like “retard”—how you could equate the two is mind-blowing, even considering the source.  IMO it’s too soon for jokes about this.  Yeah there’s “gallows humor”, but I’m not a big fan of that.

I know there were probably at least a few people joking yesterday about all the stiffs in Arlington.  I’ve heard some Holocaust jokes over the years too (hard to believe).  Some people will joke about almost anything.  And if it’s just you and a buddy or two and you know they’ll appreciate the humor, no harm no foul.

My advice to the OP was, for the future, be mindful of your audience when making light of a situation that is horrible, even deadly, for lots of people.  If you don’t like that advice, just skip over it.  Oh wait... too late!

Oh wait, I think that was actually Jensen's advice to you, but I say it better. He's too fucking nice to say it properly.

Do you have any idea just how fucking stupid you sound. You tell me that If I don't like "you objecting to a post, just skip along" Well how about if you don't like a fucking post, why do you just skip along Skippy? Or are you so fucking offended over someone trying to make light of a bad situation that you just can't fucking help yourself? OR are you just saying that it's ok for you to shit on someone else's post, but that's it's not okay for me to piss on you while you're doing it? Just how fucking stupid and entitled are you? If you have the right to object to his post, I most certainly have the right to object to object to your objection. Or is that too complicated for your little pea brain?

Lastly, I don't think this really needs saying, but big surprise I am going to say it anyhow,  do you really think I give a fuck what you are and are not a fan of? This is a fuckboard, and we are given to locker room humor around here, if you don't like it around here, PLEASE don't let the door hit you on the ass on your way out.

I'll say it another.
Don't stop fighting that's the fun in this here.
Pretend to get offended as when I post with the angry emoji.
Whatever. Let's laugh at everything even when we are pretending to be the opposite of angry or sad.

Well, on the lightening up side I do have to admit I screwed up the down side. Here I was stupidly think the reopening aspect to the pandemic and the expected reduction in readily available parking was a bad to associate with the pandemic event in general.

Steve, perhaps this is a particularly sensitive situation because you have people close to you who have suffered the worst or even died. If so you do have my sympathy. But all I can really say to that is after I lost my best friend (cancer), my dad and then my mom (both just age) I did notice that while I was out in the world feel the lost, some how a bunch of people around be for some reason were still cruelly making jokes about life and enjoying themselves.

But I did not take that personally or suggest it was too soon for the world to be making jokes that I might hear.

as you just did, is exactly what I was trying to get across in my reply to your OP.  Thank you for a thoughtful response.

I’m sorry for your loss. But I hope you realize that your situation doesn’t equate to this one, unless those people were making jokes about people with cancer or had died of cancer, and they knew there was a pretty good chance that you knew someone who recently died of cancer.

you don’t actually read what you post, for example:

“ So my suggestion to you, if jokes, tasteless or otherwise, offend you so much, maybe you should just skip over them.”

Of course you and everyone else has the right to respond to a post. Except for me, according to you.  But funny how your advice to me doesn’t apply to you. These’s a word for that.

And from your rants about my response to the OP, it appears you care a lot about what I’m not a fan of.

Try an ice pack on that bruise on your butt, could help.
