I think someone's hacked into my email. Anyone know the legal ramifications if I can find out who's doing it?

You might change your password. Your wife might be the one?

What do you mean you "think" someone hacked into your email.
What evidence do you see?

Do you have a difficult password to guess, and do always logoff when you're done?

A couple of emails in my trash that I never had a chance to read. Got a possible ex with an ax to grind! I normally don't logout, just leave to another site. It's yahoo mail.

You might try reporting your concerns to Yahoo's abuse department.

Who was the last person at your computer since you did not log off, also, get yourself another secure e-mail account or just change the password periodically.

My advice is to change your password to something very difficult, and be sure to always logout.  I don't think you have much chance of legal action, without strong specific evidence against someone.

Is there any electronic way to know if someone else has been in your email?  Any footprints?  Is there any indication if a hacker happens to get in same time you are there?

All email has routing information in the header which can be used to trace where it has come from and where it is going. With a little help from your Internet provider you can trace both incoming and outgoing email, though incoming is far easier. The ISp also has to be willing to work with you on this.

If someone is accessing your email from another computer, it is possible to discover the IP address of the machine that downloaded the email from the server. Again, you'll need your ISP's help.

You basically have to have someone check the connection logs for the server. In practice, it's more complicated than that, but unless someone breaks into the server and modifies a series of logs, there are "footprints" as you say.

As evidence that you email was "hacked", as you put it, you say:

More likely, a few stray mouse clicks.  It's very easy to do
unintended things with a few mouse clicks.  Haven't you ever
saved something to your inbox to the wrong folder?

There is a hack of sorts for free Yahoo mail accounts.

There is a trick involving a"forgot my password request" where your password can be sent to someone else.

Free Yahoo accounts are not very secure.
I would get another account and password.
