Let's say it's an evening dinner date in a good sized city.

1.  Black tie and pumps
2.  Business suit, tie, and wing-tips
3.  Sports coat, tie, and loafers
4.  Same as #3 but without a tie
5.  Polo shirt, slacks, and sneakers

I usually sport #4, but I own all of the above.

These.
And, no, I don't own a pair.  Or a tux.  I arrive in jeans and a T-shirt.  To show off my manly chest

To impress any woman on the planet...a sharp dressed man, confident, beautiful in his mind, striking, what more could a woman ask for......stunning.

Dear Ms. Steele:
I was wondering considering that you chose this picture, I take it that you like a man dressed in a business suit. With this said, if hypothetically you were in a hotel lobby or a public space who would you approach for a little conversation? While you were having the conversation what sort of assessments and decisions are you making at the point of contact and throughout the conversation? Finally at what point within the conversation would you turn the tone to one of undercover commerce? Also taking a cue from Julia Stiles character blue how would you play it considering that you have more game than Milton Bradley and Parker Brothers?

You too Nick. Lil old fashioned are we. Perhaps you should turn to the millenium, that's where I'm at even at my OLD age. Try it, give a shot, you might like it or I could teach you. How about we got to a club and I dance circles around your old ass...we could give that a shot...or you could just stand there open-mouthed. ;D

Guess you haven't followed that wife beaters case too closely.

Or did you mean the Monopoly game company?

I'll keep it brief. Let's just say if I just 'happened' to see this gentleman somewhere dressed like this.....I would assess the situation with poise and sophistication and let it flow naturally as all approaches should be handled, confidently, somewhat sensually undercover.

Probably not here as it's really not geared to gay men...but maybe he's into the bi scene.

Who knows.

And at the same time bought those Craftsman tools so as not to attract attention.

Guys can tell who's gay and who's not quite often.  Can you tell a lesbian from a distance?

We play "Gay...or not" all the time.  I win most of the time.  Try it at the mall next time you're there....it's fun.  You just need to be a tad outgoing when you ask the contestants to fess up.  But I have NO problems in being outgoing....but you know that as well  :D

some require jackets, in which case 3 and 4 would be lovely. Business suit in the daytime is nice. I love a formal do when my gent sports a dinner jacket.

I actually love seeing my favorite gents in a variety of settings and dress. And undress... :)

I guess I should mention that a nice restaurant in NY is going to be a little different from a nice restaurant in LA or Atlanta (in the latter two you could probably get away with the Polo and sneakers).

I mean, on weekends, it is shorts and polo in the summer winter shorts changes to jeans

Week days, bus casual. Winter add sports jacket.

Not so complicated.

Be comfortable and be normal

I like to pull on the tie as he comes through the door to give a big welcome kiss!

(So it's 2&3 for me)

Doesn't work with bow ties lol...but I like those too, so #1is ok.
