Let's say it's an evening dinner date in a good sized city.

1.  Black tie and pumps
2.  Business suit, tie, and wing-tips
3.  Sports coat, tie, and loafers
4.  Same as #3 but without a tie
5.  Polo shirt, slacks, and sneakers

I usually sport #4, but I own all of the above.

With this said, if hypothetically you were in a hotel lobby or a public space who would you approach for a little conversation? While you were having the conversation what sort of assessments and decisions are you making at the point of contact and throughout the conversation? Finally at what point within the conversation would you turn the tone to one of undercover commerce? Also taking a cue from Julia Stiles character blue how would you play it considering that you have more game than Milton Bradley and Parker Brothers?

some require jackets, in which case 3 and 4 would be lovely. Business suit in the daytime is nice. I love a formal do when my gent sports a dinner jacket.  

I guess I should mention that a nice restaurant in NY is going to be a little different from a nice restaurant in LA or Atlanta (in the latter two you could probably get away with the Polo and sneakers).
