Read Each One Carefully and Think About It a Second or Two

1. No man or woman is worth your tears, and the one who is,
won't make you cry.

2. Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to, doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.

3. A true friend is someone who reaches for your hand and touches your heart.

4. The worst way to miss someone is to be sitting right beside them knowing you can't have them.

5. Never frown, even when you are sad, because you never know who is falling in love with your smile.

6. To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.

7. Don't waste your time on a man/woman, who isn't willing to waste their time on you.

8. Maybe God wants us to meet a few wrong people before meeting the right one, so that when we finally meet the person, we will know how to be grateful.

9. Don't cry because it is over, smile because it happened.

10. There's always going to be people that hurt you so what you have to do is keep on trusting and just be more careful about who you trust next time around.

11. Make yourself a better person and know who you are before you try and know someone else and expect them to know you.

12. Don't try so hard, the best things come when you least expect them to.

REMEMBER: WHATEVER HAPPENS, HAPPENS FOR A REASON.

some of the lines you quote here are dangerously close to being platitudes or even psychologically unhealthy.  The thoughts behind them are good ones, but they are still generalizations and pop psychology...kind of like "Chicken Soup for the Soul".  Positive thoughts are good and healthy, but as #10 implied, there will always be hurt, tears, fears, disappointment, frowns, unrequited love, learning from mistakes, wanting too much, and people in our lives that there is no way in Hell that God would have EVER wanted us to meet or learn something from.  These things are just part of the whole human experience.

All I will say is that if you believe the last sentiment, that everything in life happens for a reason (and, by implication, that there is a mostly benevolent deity controlling all these scenarios at all times), then is makes simplification of any issue, whether personal or sociological, easier to swallow.

However, if things get too rough, you can always dot your "i"'s with flowers or sunshines!

i agree, mr. curmudgeon (hey, you took the risk :-) and i preferred "the couch was already on fire when i sat down...."

but so what? they are nice thoughts, noble sentiments. #9 especially is an attitude i aspire to achieve, but it is so hard....

tammy, i don't agree with #1: "No man or woman is worth your tears, and the one who is, won't make you cry." it is ONLY the people in my life that are worth my tears that CAN make me cry. and they will; not because they are hurtful or mean, but because they are imperfect human beings. but they are worth my tears because someday i will do the same to them and they will forgive me without question.

and i have never agreed with the conclusion, that "everything happens for a reason". i believe that everything happens at random; it is what we make of each situation that defines our character.

I totally agree with the sentiments not only being nice, but having many points worth aspiring to.  My post was somewhat nit picking...I almost feel bad for having posted it.  In many ways, I wish my mind would embrace a simpler creed, and I could let sentiments like these set my course.  I just have worked with too many people who have needed more complicated psychological help, so I tend to eschew those types of phrases.  However, they come with good intentions, and if people truly believe them, the world will certainly be a better place for these people, regardless of whether the future is decreed or random.

BTW, never heard that quote before...talk about Pollyanna!

your post was intelligent and very true in many ways. i was half trying to be funny and half trying to spout my own views... thank god for anonymous message boards :-)

i also have a hard time with simplistic platitudes; while they often contain truth, and usually attempt to inspire good feeling, they can also gloss over issues that really need more specific and in-depth attention. i do think they have value, at least as a starting point. and i think that tammy does a nice job :-)

the couch quote is a book title, from the guy who wrote "everything i need to know, i learned in kindergarten". fullman? fullgam? something like that. homespun philosophy and happy places :-)
