I've only heard it here as well. Then again, I tend to repeat words I like!

I would say the phrase "dining at the Y" is mainstream, but the acronym DATY may be a slightly unique to the hobby community.

I though "dining at the Y" was what you do when you have a picnic with the family at the YMCA?

Or in Orange County Ca if you are eating while driving your car through the merge of Interstate 5 and the 405.  (AKA dining at the El Torro "Y.")

... Don't believe I've ever seen the term 'DATO' anywhere but on hobby-related sites so I would imagine DATY is the same.

Hmmm, well the guy my mother in law is marrying this weekend has heard the term. I mentioned when we were on a long drive in Cabo and talking about our insignificant others.
