a number of you might have participated in a survey conducted by Dr. Christine Milrod (years ago the mod of The Erotic Highway Board), who is a sex researcher/therapist.

That research has now produced the first of, hopefully, more articles related to men who hobby.

This first deals with STDs.

I hope people find it interesting

1)  Only asked old dudes about their history.  I mean really old dudes, some probably dead now
2)  Of the old dudes, they're all white.  Seems to me she's a hypocrite too, don't black and latino's matter?  Can't forget our Asian friends either.
3)  The old dudes like BBFS.  Lots of it
4)  By publishing that the information she used as fact, is actually posted as total fiction on this site

It's another boring rendition of crap from someone who has found a way to pay her bills using prostitution and the women that are prostitutes.

Did I mention she's a hypocrite?

I am 21 years away from being eligible to participate in that survey.

Every night when I hit my knees I am grateful I don't need to start my day with prune juice. LOL

Thanks, interesting study of older mongers.

68% married.

9.1% reported "receiving a 'hand job' without a condom". I'm going out on a limb but that's probably fairly low risk.

BBF --  51.4% have done it.  WTF?

Income greater than $250,000 = 11.7%.  Don't show this to the ladies!!!

Sex with wife or SO - 51.0%.  Don't show this to the other ladies!!!

Ever contracted an STI = 31.1%  Don't show this to me !!!

Multiple regression analysis:  I didn't need a study to know that I'm regressing!!

Wow, that's all you got out of it?

I'd like to address those concerns you raise about the paper:

1. The study was specifically designed to target the more mature population. Many medical professionals will assume you're sexually boring once you're past a certain age, and that's clearly not the case since, as the paper pointed out, STDs have increased in the mature population.

2. The participants were white because that was who responded.  If you look at the paper, they did not exclude anyone for race, only for age since the study specifically targeted 60+.  Research in some other fields, even those regarding medical conditions, also in the past has had a white male bias, partly because of tradition, but also because getting some racial groups to participate in studies has been a challenge.  Most modern medical studies require multi-racial participation, but even this doesn't solve the problem; sometimes the number of people needed for analysis to get a statistical result that will have any meaning is much higher than the number of people for which there is final data.  Obviously, researchers try to avoid this in the recruitment process.

3. Yeah that's no surprise, but you are probably reading the 'if it's EVER happened' percent, not what is regularly happening, which was 13.9% for p-v sex.

4. The information she used also came from a specific questionnaire, not reviews.

I don't see how this is hypocritical; it's merely to highlight that mature adults are more sexually active than many medical professionals think and should be offered regular STD tests. 38% of respondents had never been tested for HIV, for instance!  Physicians started a conversation only 7.6% of the time!

Also, papers published in research journals are generally not written to be scintillating so it's no surprise you think it's "boring;" my guess is that most people would find any research paper boring unless they are used to the writing style or inordinately interested in the topic.

Happy to finally see the first product and to have participated :-)

Found interesting the mention ("hobbyists & the girlfrienf experience") to our habit to "encourage compliance with behavioral expectations and reasonable protective strategies" (implying no BBFS).

The one where Charlie (Sheen) Goodson is chasing skirts and trying to have meaningless sex with as many women as possible and where the women (ex-wife, FWB really hot psychologist, blonde psychologist, Lacey, et al) have lots of sex with lots of guys.  Which episode was that?

"it's merely to highlight that mature adults are more sexually active than many medical professionals think"
How could you tell this from the article? I personally believe that hobbyists are minority in this country, which means that majority of the adults in the United States are not hobbyists.  I was told by more than one providers that majority of their clients are in the age of 40s or 50s.  Clients aged >60 are minority among hobbyists.  Of course if the provider is more than 40-50 years old, she will see more older clients.  In summary, there might be only a very small percentage of the whole population among >60 males are actually hobbyists.  Nobody knows the real number, but I doubt the number is high.  If you do the survey among all the hobbyists, of course they are all sexually active.  But how sexually active for men >60 in the general population was never mentioned in this article.  One thing I can tell for sure, they are much less sexually active than men aged younger.

The paper points out that older men are often sexually active (they don't mention the numbers but refer to a NEJM paper where 65.4% of men aged 65-75 report having sex 2-3x/month), and STDs are on the rise in the older population (they also provide a reference, but I've seen others as well for both men and women).

Given that, it's remiss for medical providers to talk about STD testing to their likely sexually active 60+ male patients only 7.5% of the time, but like you, they rather assume the 60+ crowd is done with sex.

As a FYI - this journal has a very low impact factor so is unlikely to get much notice.

While I didn't read the entire paper, I looked at a good part of it.  Did anyone else notice this?

"The majority of participants (68.9%; n = 62/197) reported never having been diagnosed
with any STI to date."

Isn't 62/197 31.5% and not 68.9% or did I miss something

Another interesting tidbit.

" Participants (N = 208) were overwhelmingly White non-Hispanic (n = 201) and 97.1% (n = 202/208) heterosexual."

208 is hardly a valid sample size. 3% were either gay or bi. Whenever some fearmongerer says diseases are going up I always check the demographics. Among gay/BI men the disease rate has gone up. It is not true of white guys who are totally heterosexual.

You can check CDC stats and find out the same thing. I'm not sure what the point is of questioning 208 mongers. How come gays/BI types were not excluded?

62 of 197 respondents WERE diagnosed with an STI.

Also, did you notice that 38% of participants reportedly never got HIV testing, and most common reason was that they considered themselves low risk? I can just hear it: "I only go to clean girls."
