It has been quite a number of years since I was in the hobby, and I am getting my feet wet again. I am finding something that I have not seen when I was last active 5-10 years ago. A lot of women are asking for pre-payment in the form of paypal or gift cards. I have refused all of them thinking that it is a scam, but it is so prevalent that I wanted to ask. I am sorry if this is an old topic, but I could not find any discussion when I did a quick search. Are these all scams, or is this the new way of doing business? I have an appointment tomorrow with a provider who did not ask for anything like this, which leads me to believe that pre-payment is a scam, but I wanted to ask.

You must be talking about the trend towards demanding ever-increasing deposits. I can see some practicality if paying a deposit for a FMTY or longer date, but not for a normal hour or three session. At that, a reasonable amount should suffice. Gals demanding 50% plus should be shown the door, IMHO.

I guess the insecure can be fawned upon by hookers who don't really like them, so long as they ante up more cash. Of course, this opens up the floodgates for ever more ridiculous demands for compensation.
Every guy has to choose whether he's going to see the "New Wave Hookers" and enrich them, or see the ladies with reasonable policies, integrity and sincerity and enrich them instead.
I know where I'll be spending my time and money.
There are lots of scam artists who do this but also some really reputable providers requiring deposits, and occasionally, full prepayment these days. Some accept these payments via CashApp, Venmo or cryptocurrency while others only use gift cards. Again, it varies.
Do your research. See if she's established and search her name for any ripoff reports.
It's become quite common for touring ladies to require deposits of even 1-hour dates so if she's visiting your city, don't be surprised by this. But there are still plenty of companions who don't typically ask for it. 
Until you get a couple of current refs, but there are plenty of ladies that will take a booking without a deposit. If you are going to pay a deposit to ease back into the scene, make sure its a well reviewed provider that would be concerned about her reputation from a bad review. Forget about girls with a "no-reviews" policy. That is a scam waiting to happen. Personally, I would never pay a deposit unless I was booking more than 3 hours. But that is party because I always have two recent references I can use.
Don’t do it. You put yourself at risk and so many ways. I would handicap the providers that will scam you, blackmail you, any kind of negative action at over 50%. If they want a deposit I don’t bother
The scammers have the same lame reasons for demanding pre payment;; ---Counterfeit money , preventing client from not showing up, proof that that client is not LE, and the provider's safety and security. They probably attended the same fraud and scam seminar.
The problem for clients is that while more and more providers demand prepayment, those not doing so may see an increase in honest clients, but also an increase in dishonest clients, making them more motivated to also demand prepayment. A vicious spiral.
If NO ONE would pre pay then women would get the hint and stop asking/demanding. The more guys that lack the stones to stand their ground, the more emboldened the Twatter crowd will be to continue to demand pre payment. THAT is the vicious spiral, and every guy who has ever sent a deposit can blame himself in part for the growing number of women that now demand prepayment.
For the record, I don't come on the board whining about deposits, I simply skip past every provider who so much as mentions a deposit on her site/ads.

I never give upfront money, use gift cards or make deposits. I came close until I realized I was being scammed. Chances are you bit on a stolen picture in the ad and are texting some hood rat or a half educated idiot.
...and don't intend to do so.
Mainly, because any of the electronic means of payment are traceable. Either LE or a less-than-scrupulous provider (or her "manager") could track that info back to me. That might lead to some less than desirable consequences.
Read up on threads about clients being "exposed" or blackmailed by someone who traced their real-world info.
Why take that chance?
You may need to do some additional research to find the right provider who doesn't have such a policy, but I feel that the peace of mind to be worth it.

That method is more reassuring for providers because there have been cases when a client later disputes the charge for the deposit and then the lady is shorted that $.
And that is EXACTLY the problem with the way many hookers choose to do business. EVERYTHING is slanted in their favor and there is zero recourse for the customer in case of a dispute or even outright fraud.
By far the best solution to this problem is the simple one. CASH at the "point of service" That is the only way I will conduct this kind of business and the only way any guy with the least bit of sense will do so as well.
A lot of women love to compare themselves to the way an airline or hotel does business, but the difference is, If I show up at DFW Airport to find that the flight to Bogota I already paid for via American Express has been canceled I don't have even the slightest risk of not getting my money back. Even if the airline tries to screw me I have a 100% chance of getting my money back with a quick call to Am Ex. The day that hookers start doing business with those kind of safeguards built into the system that will be the day I start being ok with deposits.

There are still a LOT of companions, myself included, who prefer to be paid cash in person.
I find deposits and prepayment to be a hassle. I only require them when someone has a history of last-minute cancels, NCNS or for extended dates.
So paying a deposit, or full prepayment, is an option for those clients who really want to see me, but whom I won't give a chance due their histories.
I didn't want to do it this way but I had too many flakes that caused me to lose money or even cost me money and I had no recourse so.... this is how I now do it in those situations.

Simple don’t see those who want deposits. Plenty of high quality ones who don’t.
Will never again after doing so with 25% of fee. Her cancelling with excuse after excuse promising to refund the amount and nothing. To those who do so good for you yet I will never again to do.
I agree with GG, I did a deposit once, and even though I got my deposit back after she was a nc/ns ,it took awhile, I don’t need the stress in my life, not to mention she tried to gave me a lecture about the hobby and how the providers have so much more to lose then the client s ,but like a couple of guys have said on here ,if guys would stop paying deposits, then providers would stop asking, we do have the power to change the way providers do business!
I don't like dealing with deposits your accounts and money are always at risk of being shut down due to using them for SW but atleast with deposits you're never at a loss for the cost of your hotel room or travel due to clients canceling or nc/ns. Blame the fellows that ruin it for everyone not the providers.

Besides the obvious danger of getting ripped off, I don't need the added anxiety of having to worry about it all the way up to the session.
Most experienced hobbyists will never pay a deposit. Most professional providers know that experienced hobbyists will not pay a deposit and don't require one. A provider is free to ask for a deposit, but will be excluding many experienced hobbyists.
I experienced this first hand. This one girl I used to see way back in the day would ask for deposits, and then the day of the date if she didn’t have enough additional clients to justify renting a room she would reschedule my session for another day, and would not give me back my money. I learned to stop doing that after the second time.
Basically once you give her the money, she can do whatever she wants with it and will never give it back regardless of whether or not the session happens. She’s got you by the balls and you have essentially no recourse. Holding on to the money is a useful tool to ensure the escort actually shows up and doesn’t get lazy regarding her scheduling.
Don’t give an escort a deposit. If she asks for one, move on to a different girl, there are plenty of escorts that don’t ask for them.

A well known Adult Star, Karen Fisher, asked for a $100 deposit when she toured my area. I didn't end up seeing her since the days didn't work for me but I trusted her that I would have sent it vs. some random lady on Eros.
Another PS that wanted deposits was Ayana Angel. And if she didn't get enough pre-bookings she would cancel her trip and refund you. She is one woman I was hoping to meet.
