I guess if I received one as a gift I would definitely keep it although I have a dog already. I guess it would really depend on the lady, perhaps even when she would love to have one maybe her personal affairs won't provide her with enough time to take proper care of a dog or maybe she has a child (sometimes it is a bit harder for kids to get used to animals if they haven't grown up together). Also, keep in mind that as a tenant, sometimes leases won't allow animals on the property. Bottom line, before a puppy/dog gift is presented, investigate what her circumstances are so she won't be heartbroken in case she can't keep the dog with her.. I know it will break my heart if I couldn't keep the dog..

Um.. puppies are a lot of responsibility. I don't have time for that, my cat doesn't have time for that. Are you going to take care of the puppy whenever she's on tour? Does she even like dogs? Pets aren't something you purchase on a whim for someone. Don't put her in the position of having to give the dog to a shelter.

If I wanted something to beg, pee and chew on my shoes, I’d post on the BDSM board.

Give me a dog - then also, please include a dog-sitter, food for the rest of his life, veterinary insurance (VERY important!!), toys, and a bed.

A pet is a RESPONSIBILITY. They require time, love, money, and care. It's a bad idea, in general, to gift an animal - unless it's a family member or something and you've spoken about it at length, beforehand.

Some providers are never home! Some travel extensively or do a lot of overnights. Or might have a no-pet apartment

Oh, I don't know about that. Once had a provider give me a BJ with a mouth full of water and a goldfish in it. Felt great!

Always wanted a dog and lessons for training for a year . He was 8 , never knew his dad . And she was grate full.  Also paid her bills and tuition to dental hygienist school. Not exactly provider , she was a dancer in a club . It was a nice time. Then she moved on as did I. Nice kid , I remember he played little league . Guys were dicks , wouldn't let him play much , took care of that too. Sponsored a team got some guys I know to coach , brought in some ringers and the kids won . Beat their kids asses ( on the field )! They hated me , but couldn't do shit . I loved every moment . She was special.

Terrible idea! although a sweet gesture. I have a dog and am considering getting another BUT I would want to get him on my own. I think thats a very personal purchase.  I have had gentlemen bring my dog toys, treats, and even sports attire which I found very endearing and thoughtful but an actual puppy....no!

Guys, Just because I ask a hypothetical question doesn't mean I am thinking about doing it. I didn't even say that I am considering doing it and I know it is stupid thing to do.  Try to come up with creative answers rather than posting that it is a stupid idea. This board is filled with people who think that they are too smart and every one else is stupid.

The only thing worse than a moronic post is trying to defend your moronic post.   Just admit it was a stupid question move on.

What's really scary is that you're wasting your time and our time with such ridiculous hypothetical situations. If you're bored, take up knitting or solitare or something...People, and, yes, this includes providers, have different tastes and situations, so that your ridiculous generalities are totally fruitless for one and all...

that if she so chooses to have one, she should go and pick it out. Each animal has a different personality and anyone should see if it is the right animal for them prior to buying. Need to consider cost of pet (vets, food etc) and time.

You really don't get sarcasm, do ya? What a freakin' idiot.  You are one dumb bunny. Do the gene pool a favor and go drown yourself.  And your puppy, too.
PS: If this isn't clear enough for your dumb ass, I love dogs.  I don't love stupid OPs and you.

That is far too personal of a gift, and she might not even be able to have pets where she lives, might be allergic, or just not like animals. Personally, I am a cat person so if you happen to run across a Torte Point Himalayan, give me a ring. They run about 800.

If you're not thinking of doing it and know it's stupid, why would you be shocked when people tell you it's stupid?
Now I don't want to just drown the fucking puppy.  I want to drown you.  In a toilet

I would never give a dog as a gift unless I checked with the provider first, or anyone for that matter.  I have 2 wonderful German Shepherds.

yeah, they're a drag to take for a walk. But they don't eat much and don't require a lot of care. Plus, they're quiet and won't disturb the neighbors. If you sleep with them, they won't toss and turn or snore to wake you in the night. They won't pee or chew your shoes, or make doo-doo on your carpet. I think the only cost may be some febreze after a few weeks.

Yep, nothing says "I care" like a dead pet for a present.
