Spent a couple of hours over drinks with a friend who has been
in the biz as a stripper, escort and a few stops in between.
She happens to be one of the most intelligent and worldly wise people I know, especially when it comes to this scene.
We got to talking about the psychological and early childhood factors that brought girls and women to this line of work. Felt that there were those who were passing through to line up a little extra cash during the lean times, and then there were those who were deep in for psychological reasons.
She has spent the last several years getting therapy and she feels that she wants to continue the work because it satisfies her on an emotional level as a healer and gives her a better sense of purpose than an android job in the straight life.
She also feels that she has had to do some major self searching and eye opening in order to consistently do her thing at a high level without getting drawn into all the problems and dysfunctions of her clients (as well as herself). Her buttons still get pushed now and then from dad-like clients, but she has learned to reduce the  intensity to managable levels.
Do the women in this business seek out professional help, is it a common or not so commonly chosen strategy for keeping it all together ? Are there psychologists who specialize in the emotional issues of sex workers, adult video actors, and so on ?
If anyone had had a useful helper like this on the hard road of life, what did this person do to enrich your life, free you from your past, improve you happiness and self acceptance, or beneficiences like that ?
