I was asked if I would be visiting south Fla recently and my reply was that I have a regular "friend" in that area that wants to have me visit, so I may be down there soon...

Which got me wondering..."regular client?" "regular suitor?" "customer?" "patron?" "benefactor?" "gentleman caller?"
What is the appropriate name to call a man that I enjoy in this industry?

Seems to me that if you were being asked about a business trip by someone then "Cleint" would best describe the gent your visiting.  If your being asked about a personal trip or vacation then "friend" would probably be a good response.  

Does this question come up when explaining your travel to family?  That may be a situation that you prepare for differently.

i think in this sense everyone is a gamer.  we are all playing the game. we might have different roles, but regardless of that fact, still participants in this game. providers are gamers, they play with hobbyists.  hobbyists are gamers that p4p with providers. in a sense we are all gamers. safe to call it a game than a hobby. i think its much more non chalant than a client, regular, friend or whatever.  try gaming buddy or league member or some shit like that. i hate that stereotypical reference of us as johns, hobbyists, mongers or the like. i am a gamer!

I prefer not to be talked about, period.  Why can't you say you have business and/or pleasure in the area and leave it at that?
