Most define "Mechanical" as simply going through the motions and lacking interest of passion...or, at least not ACTING like you are interested. A gal who has a script of things to do per se, vs. treating every encounter as unique. There are certain things I will always do on a date, and then there are things that I only do with certain guys. Mechanical for me means, rehearsed. A quick kiss, drop your drawers for your bbbj, next, put condom on and stick it in, bypassing the heavy petting before intercourse. You can still be mechanical while being sensual. You can fake enthusiasm that is either believable or not.  
I would say mechanical in the hobby would be doing the same things in the same order everytime. Now only repeat customers may notice that, so just switch things up with someone you have seen before.

Mechanical with a SO is when the sex has no passion and is only done because you don't want your partner mad because it has been a while since last done. Most often the same position that just becomes boring and this is where role play spices things up.

In either scenario changing the order things are done or changing where its done  will make things less mechanical. For example sex does not only have to  take place in the bedroom does it?
