Hi , What does everyone feel about California voting on legalizing prostitution? I feel that is something all states should vote on. It is time we joined the intelligent communities. Your thoughts?
I'm sure if we were legalized the Feds and the state local govt. would put their grubby money hungry hands in the mix and push our pricing up even more because of the taxiation for us to make a decent buck...but it would be less stress as far as LE is concerned thats for sure..and i'm sure Medically we would be 100% safe because of constant rules and regs about STD etc. which is a very good thing! Should it pass, it would still be illegal in the state, just viewed differently in San Fran (LE not allowed to pursue/prosecute prostitution cases).
I think it's a great step in the right direction for allowing those that choose this work to thrive, and to allow those that are victimized to have better options for help.
There is no question that criminalizing sex between two consenting adults where cash changes hands has nothing to do with the proper functioning of society. It has to do with the fact that few public figures have the courage to stand up and defend people's right to "sin". My only concern is that while I want to see it decriminalized, I don't want the government to be getting involved in the details of the profession or controlling things. I can understand the requirement for regular health checks (from personal experience, I can say most of the higher class ladies do this now), my fear is the adoption of rules about kissing, daty, perhaps some rule that -while certain role play is allowed- no sex with religious themes are allowed. (No dressing up like a nun, for instance.)
Last week I saw a really great debate on the news between San Francisco DA Kamala Harris and Prop K supporter Carole Leigh. Both sides were debating why and how they felt about the Prop. CNN hosted both of these speakers and it really was interesting to see how strongly both sides of this issue feel about this revolutionary ballot measure. --Sitara Devi
There is likelihood more would enter the business because there won't be a criminal record. Let us say someone putting themselves through college may hesitant to enter because of the criminal misdemeanor issue that would show up on background check.
Increase in supply would balance out increase in prices or service will go up a notch due to competition. I say, decriminalize and tax, why not?
I can live with it. In Canada, it is legal in a hotel room, cool idea to me.
secondly I travel to many countries where prostitution is legal. Actually with the exception of the US and the Muslim countries prostitution is legal in most of the world.
Everyone else seems to get along just fine. Now if you are referring to the highly regulated brothels of rural Nevada, that's a different story. The rest of the world seems to manage quite nicely though.
As other have already stated, Prop. K only prevents SF from enforcing prostitution laws in most cases (having underage girls or forcing women into prostitution would still get LE attention). But prostitution would still be illegal under Cal. State law.
What I don't know is what would stop Governor Terminator or his successor from using State Law Enforcement to enforce state laws on prostitution in SF (or elsewhere in California)?
Prostitution "SHOULD" be no different. I know that is wishful thinking, but I as pointed out it works just fine in the rest of the world.
If prostitution were treated like any other business things would be just fine. There is nothing wrong with health cards and why shouldn't providers pay taxes(I know SOME do) like a carpenter or a plumber or any other business does?
I think that would be fairly hard to do. If SFPD refused to enforce prostitution laws what is Gov. T. going to do, pull the CHP off the freeways and put them all in S.F.
I live in a town with municpally controlled electricity and we pay about a third less than electric customers in neighboring towns who have a private company.
Every once in a while the government does do something right.
As for legalization of sex work, I think the deregulation route is the one to go.
If problems arise, they can always be addressed later.
