Computer question -- keeping the search criteria with the "back" button

Computer question, nerds only need read further. :)

I have recently upgraded from Internet Explorer 5.something to version 6.something. I am surprised at a new development and wonder if I can somehow fix it on my end, in my options or control panels somewhere, because the change is cramping my style.

Here's what happens. When I go to TER's "search" page, and click several options for search criteria, and then hit the search button, it USED TO be that if I eventually clicked the "back" button, my search criteria would be kept. But now, when I click "back" to return to the search page, it's wiped itself clean (except for the cookie-based city) and I have to go through the rigamarole of selecting ALL the search criteria all over again.

This cramps my style because my usual procedure HAD been, to insert a large number of desired search criteria, execute the search, and then winnow out undesirable hits by either increasing or decreasing the specificity of the search. I CAN still do that, but it requires much more work, because I must re-instate EVERY search criterion every time I return to the search page, rather than merely modifying the pre-existing ones from the previous search. This increases mouse-time significantly, and introduces the possibility of misleading myself if I fail to replicate the previous search accurately, thus further increasing my search time.

Get it? Going "back" to the search page loses the selected options. How do I keep the selected options instead? Is there any way to change the manner in which IE 6 interacts with pages like that? It's bugging the HECK out of me ...

Thanks for your help ...

I'm on IE 6.0.xxx  Here's 3 things to try:

1. You may be hitting the back button one to many times - try the forward button next time it happens - or be more patient :-)

2. Try the little black DOWN button just to the right of the BACK button.  Select the re-entry point you want.

3. Once you get your criteria entered, click FILE, NEW, WINDOW.  Close the old one and start a new one each time.

Good luck!

Check to see if you have "AutoComplete" enabled.  This setting will save previous settings and "AutoComplete" items you have entered before.  To check this go to Tools-Internet Options-Content-Personal Information-AutoComplete.

While Auto-Complete can be a nice feature I would be very cautious about using it if you are a hobbiest. If your computer is shared with someone else I would absolutely not turn it on.  Why?  Because if someone fired up IE6 on the computer and someone started to type in "the" it would helpfully suggest "theeroticreview" as an auto-completion (as an example).  Definetly not the kind of help you want.

Just my 2 cents...

the short answer (in all likelihood) is to switch to Netscape 7.x

don't ADAPT yourself and your computing habits to a flawed browser monopoly ... discard it

there you have it ... from a {li/u}n{u/i}x  OpenSource nerd

you'll switch to Konqueror, Galeon, or Opera.

How do Konqueror and Galeon compare to Opera?

i was just about to go back and modify my post ... to obliterate that {li/u}n{u/i}x/OpenSource comment ('tis revealing too much i thinketh) ... and then there you go putting it in your Subject line no less [sigh]

and here i was all along, trying to come off NOT sounding like a total nerd (lookout for my "revenge")

d'oh, i mean feh! ... indeed

Thanks for your suggestions, but so far none solve the problem. The different ways to hit "back" had all already been tried. I liked the auto-complete suggestion and thought that would fix it -- had it turned off due to security concerns -- don't know why I didn't think of it myself -- but it didn't make any difference.

I can't change platforms, that's not 100% under my control. Anyway Netscape is too expensive and prohibitive for a lot of other reasons, not the least that it's never been compatible with my computer. Crashes crashes crashes galore.

I changed over to Netscape -- was surprised to find a free DL of 4.7 -- and it seems to keep the search criteria whenever I back-ify myself to them.

I am not sure if maybe the license will run out on this copy, or something, but for now I'm (back) in the land of non-IE users again, and loving it! I remember the good ol' days when I was a student at a major university with a teenie weenie Mac and Netscape was the internet standard ... all the old keyboard shortcuts coming back to me ... Hallowe'en Netscape Deja Vu ...

Hmm ... Deja Vu ... I oughta hit a strip club tonight to see the ladies' attire (or lack thereof)!

Thanks for the suggestions!

For all the ballyhooed "openness" of Netscape, they want more money from me than IE does for the privilege of using their software. I happened upon an old version that has a home-page locked to search.com (no problem, I always start up at a blank page anyway), but the advantages to me are equally outweighed by the disadvantages, if you want to call them that.

I find it hard to be sold on a "way of life" regarding any given choice in software. To me, as a very bright person but a non-tecchie, they're all just the same: me sitting on my ass using a mouse or a keyboard. The minor discrepancies never actually allow me escape from one form of hegemonic über-system or other, be it corporate profiteering or the converse limited general compatibility, all of them in the hands of nerds and geeks.

When it's as straightforward as my washing machine, and as easy to fix, then I'll sign up for a "way of life" and laud the merits of one system over another.
