Back in those days to find a provider I looked at the Reader. It was a weekly newspaper that had some news and music and entertainment reviews. Under the section of Massages is where you could find most of the provider's ads. Eventually the Reader made an Adult section for these ads.

As far as meeting a provider I called, she just gave me her exact location. We agreed on a time to meet within half an hour.  I was on my way.

How did you make appointments before cell phones? Did she give you directions to a payphone a few blocks down from her incall?  It seems that everything is "text/call me when you're near"  nowadays.  Just wondering how it was before.

Before cellphones, I was directed to a location with a payphone, where I believe she have a pair of binocs to spot me from her window.  If I looked OK, then I got the call at the payphone, if not .... I was left to wonder why I did not receive a call back and crossed her off of my list.

... circa1990, advertised in an alternative weekly newspaper.  Such ads were located in the "back pages".  When you called her for the first time she would direct you to a pay phone across the street from her place in a high rise apartment building from where you would telephone her.  If she liked what she saw she'd then meet you in the lobby and escort you up.  On subsequent visits you just had to make an appointment and find your own way up at the appointed time.  Does anyone remember Tiffany or her "receptionist" Nina

in the olden days when a gentleman wanted to have an assignation with a lady of pleasure, we would go to the telegraph office and send out a message.  then we would wait by the boot black's stand and see which carriage would drop off women with dresses about their ankles.  when one would find such a lady, we would retire to the room behind the ice truck delivery garage, and have at it.

usually a tuppence would suffice for the donation, but more often than not you would get the pox.

Good post!

You got a copy of the local weekly entertainment rag, and turned to the personals column, and start dialing.  Maybe one in ten would pick up, and with any luck she'd be over in a couple of hours, and maybe if she was good she'd give you her private line, and then you'd have a regular you could usually count on for maybe a year until the line no longer worked.

Ah, the good olde days

but it was still a struggle to find someone to repeat with and then if you were lucky you could get her phone number and see her "off campus", for more adventurous sessions.

Either way, you had your work cut out for you

I can remember asking clerks of adult book stores if any ladies were working nearby. As you might expect, very few had information, or were not willing to share information with a stranger.

To paint a little picture for you, one memorable evening while I was visiting Pittsburgh about 35 years ago, I asked the store clerk for a suggestion. He told me to go to a certain bar, and I would find a certain thin brunette at the bar.

I did as he suggested, found the thin brunette just where the clerk said she would be, discussed financial arrangements, rented a hotel room for a couple of hours and had a wonderful evening. I remember parts of the evening like it was yesterday.

Probably would not be that adventurous today.

Back in the day that was code for I'd like a visitor. Most Concierges had numbers for available ladies and would set that up for you. That conspiracy to promote prostitution felony wasn't in force in those days. Don't try it today.

Some ladies had pagers, you had to hang around a phone to see if they would call. The yellow pages had lot's of ads for entertainers and escorts.

In most places the mob had a bigger grip on it. They had houses for women to work out of. The lone wolf independent was more likely to be sitting at a bar. Word would get out which bars and you could go to try to make new friends. The street walking scene had a higher quality of lady.
