Long ago he was the third wheel on Easy Rider, but by the end of the movie it was his so-called friends who were left slaughtered on the side of the road. After that, the pattern was set: He gets a little mad in the diner, someone ends up in Five Easy Pieces, but everyone cuts him slack, because he's Jack. Always with the big smile, always the great guy, the man's man who can cuss until The Last Detail. Until one day, his eyes go mad, there's a knife in his hand, and he's willing to kill his own family just to see The Shining. Oh but that's just Jack. We put up with the arrogance, the cutthroat behavior, because he's Jack, because nobody can act like he can, because, well, maybe we're the ones who "can't handle the truth." And, by the way, you shoulda known he was just kidding, you shoulda known it was just a practical joke, nothing more than Terms of Endearment.
