The manual contained a method of calculating how much rope/drop is required for a good, clean hang based on the weight of the condemned.

Very handy.

also a lot of the research on how much nastiness a human can take (electrical, chemical, radiation, etc.) is based on research conducted during WWII.

on occasion i've had to read that stuff :-(
