Have you no respect at all .

It was done with dignity by those who know that one day it could be their remains being returned to their families and who themselves are sacrificing their lives for our freedoms.

I am also a Navy veteran and find your comment disgusting, moronic, and utterly disrespectful! Imagine the families of those three heroes and what they were going through while receiving the remains of their loved ones. This kind of filth has no place in any conversation with other human beings!!!!!!! By the way, I bet your buddies on the P&R board are real proud of you now.

. . . it is a poorly written headline that lends itself to absurd interpretations like "Crack Found in Man's Buttocks" or "One Armed Man Applauds Kindness of Strangers" (actual headlines).

No sense of humor.

just because it's written that way doesn't mean you have to bring attention to their sub-standard headlines with trashy remarks such as yours. Poking fun of newspaper headlines is great, but please keep it in proper context. Making a  crude joke at the expense of men who gave their lives to uphold your right to do just that is the epitome of classlessness.

There was NOTHING in that headline to suggest that the remains might be returned in some undignified manner.  That, Sir, came from between your ears and only you can take responsibility for originating the disgusting idea that casualty remains might be returned by common carrier.

There is nothing on earth done with more dignity and honor than the manner in which the US military returns of the remains of war dead to their family and to a final resting place.  It has been my distinct honor to assist in this process for friends killed on active duty and still more veterans passing on naturally.

I'm really disappointed in the replies so far.  I'd like to point out a couple things...

The OP didn't WRITE the headline; he just repeated it.

If you guys were so proud of your service, you should understand that one of the freedoms you fought for was the freedom of expression.

I don't think that it was a terribly tasteful post, but he didn't exactly set a carload of babies on fire either.  You guys sound like you need to get laid more.

OK, flame away.  I'm tough enough to take it...:)

You are pathetic!
You make a vile disgusting and despicable remark and now, with all that is pointed out to you, you try to defend the remark.
You are lower than WHALE SHIT.
As jhb pointed out just because the headline is poorly worded or YOU think it is does not make your remark OK.
As for a sense of humor, there is nothing humorous, funny, or amusing about a brave courageous man or woman who gave their life for this country.

Instead of making a despicable remark you should be acknowledging the courage, thanking them for their sacrifice and extending condolences to the family.

Oh, I support his right to say and write what he wants to. I also have the right to disagree and express that disagreement. Sense of humor? Yeah, I have a one, but I'm selective about when and how I use it. Get laid more? Yeah, maybe you're right. But even if I got laid every day, that still wouldn't change my thoughts on this, and make it less emotional. I've made my point, so I'll say no more, and I'LL now await all the distribes!! BCNU

I and I think everyone else realizes he did not write the headline, but just repeated it.
The headline is not the problem. (as for me i do not think it is poorly worded)
The problem is his comment about it .

Yes he has freedom of expression and so do all those who replied have the freedom to express our disdain for his remark

"I have this image of a UPS truck pulling up to a house..." which WAS written by 741512th.

As to freedom.  Freedom to be disrespectful of the dead (no matter how they died).

Freedom to make racial slurs... That included?

Freedom to spead untrue rumors about honest hard working folk....  can that be a given.

Freedom to be ignorant?  I'd vote for that one as well....

Freedom carries responsibilities.  and one is self restraint.... some self censorship... the all grown up ability to make good choices...

I've a 14 yr old who has informed me that he is free to do whatever he wants....  I said yes you do...   but by the way, I'm not financing stupid stuff.

No flame, just pointing out that as much as 741512th has the "Freedom" to make a piece of shit of himself... others have an equal right to say it stinks.  as you say, flame away.

I am probably coming dangerously close to exposing myself by stating this but I am a civilian employee and have active duty family members of the Coast Guard which is the service involved in this incident (not the Navy).  I am also a veteran of two other service branches with active duty enlisted service in Vietnam from 71-73.  I found the remark mildly offensive but would not object or comment on it other than to say maybe it should be on the humor board.  What I find more offensive is the general uncivil nature of the discourse on this board.  I am a newbie and find the atmosphere more comfortable on that board.  I feel that if we were all discussing things face to face we would be more courteous.

Some of the conduct is pretty over the top, a recent posting of a war crime photograph comes to mind.

I like reading this board and would like to feel comfortable posting on it.  If I were to cross the line I think a friendly "this is slightly off topic" or I appreciate your attempt to lighten the mood regarding this incident but the timing is not good"

No flames, as I actually agree with all your points.  I just think the protest is larger than the offense.  But then maybe that's just me exercising my freedom to be ignorant, lol.

Everyone is mad at the disrespect towards a veteran....would anyone have laughed had it been the remains of 3 convicts....?

Many of the great comedians and cartoonists were constantly berated for being disrespectful and distasteful, but they always were able to find the lighter side of life. Now I totally respect these men and their families and don't condone the comments, but isn't it okay to sometimes look at the lighter side of a serious subject?

Imagine if you will, a FarSide comic with a cartoon lady sitting at a table reading her paper with that headline and outside of the window a UPS truck is pulling up in her driveway. I don't believe the original poster meant any disrespect by his comment...he just has a different sense of humor and finds comedy in subjects that are otherwise serious.

I don't know, I am guessing and if you strip away the serious element and remove the personalization of it, it actually is kind of humorous. Don't kill me over this, it's just to make everyone think.

Ok, I am a USN vet and I find the turn of phrase to be insulting. But I went through worse in the 70s, when it seemed as though everyone under thirty hated us. But once you've been shot at, words don't really rise to the level of getting upset. So I appreciate everyone who has voiced a patriotism based criticism of the post, but I don't think it's worth getting upset about. The fact that most Americans today are respectful of those who are serving and have served is enough for me.

but I have seen posts much, much worse than this get nowhere near the outrage this has generated.

I don't see how he is dengrating the sailors or the families, only the AP for the way they worded the headline.

Who would of thought I would be the only one to defend a lefty like 741512th? but I just don't see what was so egregious about his post.

OTOH I don't really see how they could have worded the headline much better than they did.

People have said some really outrageous shit on this board, like the post that was removed a day or so ago about the boyfriend of Bristol Palin, I just don't see this post in the same light.

I have never seen people with more ridiculously rabid viewpoints than some of the people on TER about ANYTHING to do with "the troops"...other than some Islamic people regarding anything to do with Islam!

Ironic grouping, isn't it?

I was a soldier for four years myself, have scars on my body from grenade fragments, was the son of a WW2 veteran, and I think it is hilarious that some people on here think that everyone who just puts on a uniform is some sort of saint.

Get over it, people.  Jesus H. Christ! (Oh, there is another bit of blasphemy, I guess)

I agree, some of the funniest comedy is stuff that is irreverent towards EVERYONE.  It's why South Park, for example, has been on so long.

I ought to post soldier jokes on here as much as possible.  Jeez, do some people go overboard!

Yeah I was surprised at the outrage.

The comedy was in the LITERAL translation of a FIGURATIVE statement. It had nothing to do with the individuals, their families, or the honor and dignity of their service and death.

But all of you who use comments such as "lower than whale shit" are equally as disrespectful as the original poster. A tasteless joke (to some) does not make a person worthless or a terrible person.

I took a group of teenagers to tour a funeral home. At the end of the tour we were in their office & the director opened up a metal cabinet & took out what looked like a brown paper bag for lunches. Showed it to the kids & said, "This is what we get back from the creamatory." On a rack next to the counter was a roll of butcher paper & he said if we have to mail it we wrap it in this. It astounded me that they would just mail that, so I asked if they sent it registered or insured. He smiled & said that they didn't because how could you put a value on them and "besides if they get lost the just end up in the dead letter office." - True story.

As one othe guy  posted .. i too have a sence of humor in the bucket loads, your OP was NOT funny at all, and the vast majority here feel the same.

as another poster pointed out  the more you post the deeper the hole you dig for yourself.
