Assistants can be great IF they are responsive and helpful. Sometimes they are easier than providers who might be busy, traveling, our just our and about.

As to your last question, personally, I would rather communicate directly with the provider. The exception would be if the lady in question is just so busy in her personal life that it causes her to only be able to reply to her emails every few days, then in that scenario, I would prefer an assistant. I don't sweat this either way as it isnt a deal breaker for me at all, just a preference.
