... sometimes in the hotel I would like to see it on the large screen. At the Apple store (naturally I DIDN'T say I wanted to patch the porn playing on my laptop DVD to the telly) it was explained that it wasn't simple; i.e. they couldn't help me.
I am certain there are TER folk who might shoot down this explanation. Please PM me.
Also, as a soccer fan, I may want to watch some upcoming matches as well, streaming from the laptop to the hotel television. Now THIS may be complicated, I grant you that. PM me also if you've the solution.
The older model (> about 2 yo) mac laptops had AV cable outputs that made it easy. I assume you don't have an older model laptop because then this would be easy.
For the newer laptops you probably need an 'Apple DVI (or mini-DVI, depending on your laptop model) to Video Adapter', then an S-video or composite cable to go to the TV.
I'm surprised the people at the mac store weren't able to help you. Go back and ask for the thing above. Bring your laptop to make sure it fits, if you want.
If your hotel TV has a video and audio input that you can select with the hotel remote then you are all set. You will need a cable, most likely VGA w/an audio cable attached, to go from your laptop to the TV. You can buy these on line or at places like Micro Center. Note, if you are a Mac guy you will need to purchase a dongle adapter at the apple store to convert your Mac's video out to VGA.
If you don't know what the hotel has for TV's it's a bit more of a crap-shoot. There are adapters and converters available but it can get very costly and some properties won't even have the sets enabled to receive signal from an outside source. Also, be aware that unless you have DVD quality video on your laptop, the picture is actually going to be much sharper on your computer than it will be blown up on a big screen. This is especially true if you are talking about the low-res crap on tube sites.
There was no sound output on Apple mini-DVI until about 6 months ago. In this case, you needed a mini-DVI to HDMI cable for Video and 3 mm- RCA audio adapter and RCA cable to get audio to your TV.
On the other hand if you purchased you MacBook pro 6 months or so ago, then Mini-DVI out put includes audio and video. In this case you will need a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter. Apple store generally has it but I found some on Amazon cheaper than the Apple store (see link).
All so called Geniuses in Mac store are not so Genius. I had a problem with one of those Geniuses over the Holidays (Temp help, I suppose) she didn't know much so, I told her I want to talk to someone else.
