Anything is dangerous...

...when taken in excessive amounts...from the sound of it he took many times the recommended dosage...even the safest herbals can turn toxic eventually...

As most of you might know, a famous sports figure was found ODed on the stuff at a legit brothel in Nevada.

Is it to be avoided? (The herbal Viagra that is, not the brothel which a presume ought to be avoided in any case.)

Does it have advantages?

Inquiring minds (Well, mine anyways) wants to know

I would think it too dangerous as the dosage is not usually metered out like in prescription drugs...even differences from one batch to another.

And because it is herbal, people tend to go overboard with it feeling it is safer than prescription drugs.

Think what you will about the FDA but at least they take a look at prescription meds, hopefully with the idea that they will not approve something dangerous.  Last I heard, and I'm probably stating the obvious, there is not such scrutiny for herbals so it's a snake oil salesman's dream

The underlying question would be what would the active ingredient be in the herbal viagra.  Then how much of it did he use and what would be the half life of the herb in question.

even if he didnt take all the other drugs, one would need to take a significant amount more herbal viagra to OD on. Remember, herbal viagra is just extraction from plants and/or herbs.  one would have to take alot of pills to OD on. ( but anything in excess can be dangerous

Especially when taken with an eight ball and washed down with a full bottle of booze.

Is anyone really buying into the story that he OD'd on "herbal Viagra"???!!! I guess there need to be a lot more SPOTY's being passed out this year.

especially when she is face down, ass up, her face buried in a pillow while he was doing lines off her ass. lmao

Reminds me of that opening coke/hooker scene in the Wolf of Wall Street ... And it's on Netflix.

I don't think anyone wants to become addicted to anything. I don't use any drugs and I'm hardly a bleeding heart, but I feel sorry for anyone addicted to drugs, especially if it brings them to death's doorstep.  Yes, he made a horrible, stupid choice to get involved with addictive substances, but last I checked we are all human and by definition totally capable of fucking up our lives.  So I guess we're both entitled to our opinions, but I do feel real sorry for him, and for his loved ones.

Sorry.

The whole industry is unregulated.  The FDA has almost zero authority to do much of anything about it until enough people die or get seriously sick.

If you find that your herbal drug of choice is really effective it is probably because the manufacturer spiked it with the real prescription drug but in inaccurate, often overly large, doses

thanks for clearing this up -- but it appears they are not regulated in this same way they regulate actual drugs.

FDA does regulate this industry as they do with Pharma, Cosmetic, Food industry  http://www.fda.gov/Food/DietarySupplements/
Thanks for pointing out my overstatement, towaco. There is FDA regulation but it is much different from prescription drugs. Most of the FDA actions we hear about occur after the damage has been done.

If you are counting on the FDA regulations to protect you from unsafe supplements (or cosmetics - another industry that gets away with ingredients like formaldehyde when safer preservatives are available), think again.

Supplements (and most cosmetic ingredients & household chemicals) are "safe" until they aren't (see my link provided below).  Proving they aren't, unless they are highly toxic & off you fairly obviously, is extremely difficult because human studies depend on correlation, and we all know that correlation does not equal causation when trying to "prove" something. When there are alarming animal studies, there is always the argument that if something is terribly toxic to an animal, it won't apply to humans (which is sometimes true, but oftentimes it is at least a flag).  The bar for proving something unsafe to humans is very, very high.  Public outcry does work eventually, but that's a poor method since the public tends to be either be scared of all "chemicals" or think that they are exposed to so many bad things that one more doesn't matter.

Also, contamination is a huge problem with herbal products as imposter mentioned in his post.  A study a couple of years ago found lots of fillers & contamination in herbal products (see link).  This is against FDA rules, but they don't have the manpower to actually enforce anything.  They only look into a supplement after serious problems are reported (usually several have to die). It's truly a buyer beware market.

This is the study that found unlabeled herbs (as fillers) in supplements or a lack of any of the labeled herb:

As for what happened in the brothel, who knows what & how much that guy had been taking...

there is more to this than herbal viagra; but it is sad to see someone go downhill like this.

Athletes, more than most, live life for 5 to 10 years - get paid well - then it is all over. Some can handle it and others cannot.

Lamar also had the Kardashian, reality tv fame issue.

Just sucks as it draws attention to Vegas and legal prostitution.

Why would anyone swallow stuff that has not been examined by the FDA, is of unsure composition and is a mixture of different stuff in an unknown combination?

Probably manufactured by the well known "Take-a-chance" pharmaceutical; company

“Virtually every drug imaginable was found in his system,” the source says.  Witnesses have also confirmed the drug news claiming XXXX had cocaine and opiates in his system. They also noted track marks on one of his arms, but it was unclear if they were fresh or from previous drug use.

This is not good news.  Apparently he had two friends die of drug overdoses earlier this year - sounds almost like suicide by brothel.  God Bless Him.

may be impure & even have pharma mixed in with no labeling.  Dangerous IMHO.

My urologist recommended trying "horny goat weed"...  guess it works.  Maybe he thinks I'm a horny goat...
