NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Condoms designed to meet international size specifications are too big for many Indian men as their penises fall short of what manufacturers had anticipated, an Indian study has found.
The Indian Council of Medical Research, a leading state-run center, said its initial findings from a two-year study showed 60 percent of men in the financial capital Mumbai had penises about 2.4 cm (one inch) shorter than those condoms catered for.
For a further 30 percent, the difference was at least 5 cm (two inches). A poor fit meant the prophylactics often didn't do the job they were bought for, and led to some tearing or slipping off during use.
"One of the reasons for a failure of up to 20 percent (of condoms) is the association of the size of the condom to the erect penis," the council's Dr. Chander Puri told Reuters, adding another reason was couples often put them on in a hurry.
Puri said many men in India, which has the world's highest HIV positive caseload, were too shy to ask for condoms.
"We need more vending machines for condoms of different sizes so people can pick a condom with confidence that is suited to their needs," he said.
The Times of India reported the ICMR survey had studied 1,400 men between 18-50 years of age in cities like Mumbai and New Delhi as well as in rural areas in a report. It entitled its story "Indian men don't measure up."
One can usually find smaller condoms at adult stores. They tend to have a wider selection than the corner pharmacy. The smaller sizes are usually referred to as "snug fit" or some other euphemism. Condoms by Japanese manufacturers, such as Crown or Kimono, also tend to be smaller in size. I offer no comment on if that's an insinuation about East Asian sizes. I really find it hard to believe that the leading cause of the HIV rate to be increasing is because men are too shy to ask for condoms.
I would venture to say it might have more to do with the recent increase in technology in the country as well as the opportunity for residents to start traveling further than they have traditionally.
I believe the virus started spreading significantly because the development in outlying areas of society forced an introduction by men to new communities which facilitated the spread of the virus...… Additionally, India was not aware, Nationally, of the need to educate in regards to HIV until the spread was gaining momentum.
India is quickly becoming one of the most competitive countries in the world. With the second fastest growing economy in the world, they might soon be a leader of technology in that area.... It was most unfortunate that there was such a huge difference between the modernized Cities and the outlying settlements and villages. It has been documented that 70% of the countries residents live in rural areas.
With India fast becoming a leader of technology, one of the sources of medicine and innovation for the area, I am sure the countries health ministry will get the spread of HIV under control. It is a large country and many outlying areas are far behind the rest of the country.

If, as an American male, there is an attitude of grander in suggesting penis size then I can appreciate that...… If the research has shown that 60% were an inch shorter I’ll accept that, as long as they are kind, gentle and caring while using what they have. I have a very serious appreciation for a country who has over 80% practicing a spiritual belief of non-violence, it is evident in the bedroom! The faith of the country has more than 80.4% of the people as Hinduism, considered the world's oldest religious and philosophical system.
I guess the bottom line might be that regardless of the equipment a man may have...… if he is unable to use it effectively then what good is it.
