I don't post much, but today waiting for the Verizon guy who is supposed to show up between 8:00 and noon, and will probably show up at 12:15, I am debating about the "taking advantage thing". Are we - I mean women - the easy targets or what?

Yesterday, I went to have the oil changed in my truck, and I was outside waiting. I saw them removing my air filter which was light gray, and putting a new one. Cool, I did not mind until I saw them a few minutes later digging into their trash cans to find the dirtiest air filter and hanging it in front of my nose to show me how urgent the matter was to change it..... and it's just one example among others.....

Another one: I was coming back at 2:00 am from the emergency clinic for animals, and I always drive kind of slow at night around where I live just because of the deer and so on. Suddenly a police car with lights on made me stop. When I asked him why he stopped me. He told me I was drunk and that he stopped me because I was driving at the speed limit and I had stopped at the stop signs.... He grabbed my Diet Coke from the open window and sniffed it then spilled it on the ground. Made me stand on one foot, the other one, spell the alphabet, follow his light with my eyes, then finally decided it was helpless, and let me go.... but he was furious...

Yesterday, the guy who moved my lawn with his big tractor knocked down 3 or 4 of my solar lights outside, got down, threw them in the bushes, and went back to mow.....

I am not going to write a novel about it, but do guys are treated the same way by other guys? Is there a class in highschool that guys are taking to have so much fun with us or what? LOL!

It's not just the chicks getting the shaft.  I'm a 6'2" male, 230 pounds, very muscular.  Folks are always trying to take advantage of me as well.  Heres what you do.  Don't pay the mechanic, and report him to the BBB and the State.  That will take about 10 minutes online.  Have the lawn service come a few more times.  When you get the invoice deduct the time it took you to put the lights back in.  I would imagne $300.00 is an appropriate amount for your time.  Be sure and report the cop to his superior.  Also call the local paper, and womens group.  Don't be afraid to embelish, like when he grabbed your breast, he deserves it.  All this will go in his jacket.  Don't get mad, get even!

I am afraid that while there may be some "special treatment for women", dishonesty is an equal opportunity within the human race.

Report the auto shop to the Better Business Bureau, report the cop to his Precinct Commander in a formal complaint, and fire your lawn guy.  Bastards like that will always be with us, but there is no reason a woman -- or a man -- should be abused this way.  As for Verizon, I have always had good luck with them.  Smokey.

the agency that licenses repair shops and tell them what they did.  It will say in your owner's manual how often to change the airfilter (They last a long time now.)  You can pick up one at K-Mart for less than half of what they will charge you.

As for the cop, I hope you got his badge number.  He is being a world class prick.  Complain to the duty officer at his station.  These guys hate to get complaints from citizens and he will tell the jerk to straightened up or be put on dog duty.

Call the lawn guy and tell him to replace those lights or call his boss or just don't use him.

Let's not be Americans here, if you know what I mean.

Reminds me of that Frank Zappa song "Flakes." It seems more and more we're forced to deal with idiots, although perhaps women may tend to put up with it rather than embark on a time-wasting futile, but ego-salvaging complaint tirade like us guys would. I think all those outsourced "help" line people in Bombay recognize my voice by now.

I had a similar experiance with Comcast -- they replaced my cable and afterwards the picture was fuzzy. I asked them to come out and got the "We'll be there sometime between 8 am and 6 pm" line. I told em to cancel my service and I'd reconnect when they could give me a 2-hr window to be there. 10 years later I'm still happy with DirecTV.

I agree with the other commenters -- you shouldn't take this lying down (for want of a better analogy LOL), although complaining may fall on deaf ears. Don't go back to that service center, refuse to pay your lawn service till they fix your lights -- switch services if they don't.

I did all that. As a matter of fact I framed a check of 95c as replacement for my diet coke that the cop grabbed.
I do complain, and sometimes I just feel overwhelmed that nothing can ever get right. I wish that sometimes Life could be a quiet peaceful river and not Niagara Falls! LOL!

The verizon guys are union and do not give a shit cause it is very vert difficult to do anything to them. they go as slow as possible,(about 3 weeks ago) saw one verizon guy in his truck taking a nap on a sunday afternoon, (wonder what they get paid on sundays)

You may want to try the better business bureau, I do not know where you are but some of the offices are real good about getting on these type of things. (www.bbb.org) I think that is their site if not google it

True story:
once I was driving down the road... with several cars behind me... there was an embankment on the left of me and a stream of cars coming towards me... the third vehicle in the line swerves out of the line and into my lane... as it approaches at 40 MPH, I can see that the woman driving the TRUCK is asleep... she hits my car... my knee goes into the firewall and breaks my kneecap!

Off to the emergency room I am taken...  an orthopedic surgeon is called in....  He looks at the X-rays, mutters, mumbles... writes a couple of scripts... makes a funny with the nurse... then comes over to the table with me on it... and says "We have to operate to repair you knee"

I ask, "And if we don't?"

"Well, by operating we will be certain that your knee will heal properly"

I continue to probe, "But if you don't operate, won't my knee heal anyway? and by operating aren't there risks in operating that may be worse than a broken knee, such as a bone infection?"

He looked disgusted, but continued, "Well, in cases like this, to be sure if we operate we can get you walking without crutches in 4-6 weeks!  Don't you want that?"

I asked, "and if you do not operate, what is the recovery time likely to be?"

Again, 'the look,' "Well, it will be about 6-8 weeks, but you see, it may not heal properly."

I am getting a bit preturbed, so I continue, despite the "doctor" gazing upon me with the look of a person speaking to a carrot, "Well, if it does not heal properly, can you then operate to correct the missalignment?"

After clicking his ball point pen about 20,498 times, he hisses through his teeth, "Yes, we can do that, but you wouldn't like it!"

At this point, I decide to end my misery and comment, "well I would like a second opinion from my former chairman, dr. Y at the University of xxx or Dr Z at the University of www, a friend, here are their phone numbers... "(and I whip out my PDA.

the good ole doc turns white.  he steps back.  He looks at me and asks "Who are you?"

My response, "its all there in the chart, I am your patient,  and I expect the most reasonable care possible, that has a path with the fewest potential complications.  Is that clear.  Oh by the way, I was a professor of orthopedics at the University of xxx"

True story.  Perhaps he had a boat payment, perhaps it is because I am green. or perhaps, he was so arrogant as to practice medicine in a private practice as he saw fit with no challenge.  I don't know.  All I know is he chose a path that was, IMHO, not the best practice of medicine.

So my dear Nikki, next time you wait for the verizon man... think that at least he is not your doctor.  We ALL get had from time to time... and we all feel put upon.... my car guy... who I trusted - I found out, overcharged my by about $2000 in one year alone.  You have my sympathies.

As for the air filter, they try it on everybody.

Girls have it much easier, though. Case in point: a girl I know has all the luck. She gets free gas and cigs at the gas station by her house because the fat guy there is in love with her. She gets out of tickets all the time. She knows a few guys who own car shops, so her car work is done for free. She knows everyone in the club and bar scene, so she gets in for free and drinks all night for free. Men fawn all over her and rush to do everything for her and she's hot, but not exactly a 10. She's just got all the luck. I'm waiting to see if she'll have a luck swap like that stupid Lindsay Lohan movie that's coming out. I'll kiss her until I get her luck! lol.

Wonder how many hoobyists on this site are docs?  So if we have any "bone" problems we should consult you?!

I remember reading an article that said that statistically, more men get ripped off for car repair than women.

I have Verizon DSL, and it doesn't work very well.

...however, you don't have anything to stand on as far as the cop is concerned.  Even though he was an abusive prick, it's his word against yours.  I had a similar situation with one when I was in college.  After passing all of his sobriety tests, he cited me for running a red light (totally bogus).  Even though I was cleared of the charge in court, it cost me a day and a good attorney.  Moral to the story, if encountered by a prick of a cop be careful what you say.  As for reporting him, I wouldn't.  Never know which one of his buddies might pull you over the next month.

then I would get called upon to make a differential diagnosis!  lol!  EDS Osteogenesis Imperfecta etc.... molecular stuff.... I don't do dat no mo.

I start speaking Spanish to the landscapers telling them how big my husband and cousins are. I tell the auto mechanic how I used to be in the military and worked on vehicles and how I almost strangled the last idiot who thought he could get away with cheating me. Then I call the office of the repair man to make sure he is coming and to let the office know he is late. Unfortunately, these days, a woman has to be poised but strong to get her point across. Some men (and women) will think that's being bitchy. However, I feel like I have to become a "bitch" to get anything done. But, cleverly, I do it in a way -- attempting to be articulate -- that makes these ripoff artists feel like idiots. Wink! I guess that's why my friends take me with them when they want to get something accomplished and they fear they won't be taken seriously.  R O A R ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
