The dictionary says that a pimp is a man who employs prostitutes and keeps some of their earnings. It says a female pimp is a "madam". The word pimp has generally negative connotations, and a pimp who is running street girls may be involved in slave trade, drug dealing (and addicting the girls), beating them up, taking all the money, and so on. But according to the "straight" dictionary, anybody who emplys a prostitute and keeps some of the money is a pimp (or a madam).

A pimp acts as an agent of sorts. He collects some or all of the proceeds from her selling her ass. He usually advertises for her, and might even "own" a piece of the "track", or in other words, he monopolizes an area in which only his hoes are allowed to work. They often offer "physical protection", which is a joke, because in most cases he is in no position to be of any use until after the fact, and more often than not she ends up needing physical protection from her pimp more than her clients. That's your typical old school streetwalker pimp prototype.

With supposed mid range/ high end internet hookers who have "pimps" *cough*, it's most often a manipulative charity case fuckboi posing as a boyfriend to her, and as a pimp to his friends, while he is actually neither - just a freeloading bum in fact. I've known a few like that.  

It's really all a matter of opinion. the nature of my buiness has put me face to face with some semi-"famous" pimps like Don 'Magic Juan', Pimpin Ken etc.. and in their estimation, (I'm paraphrasing) if you can't convince a prostitute to willingly give you the proceeds from her hooking, you are not a pimp. Not SOME of it, ALL of it.

In my own opinion, if you are in the business of making money off of the sexual services that women provide, in any of its many forms, you are a pimp, or if you can convince a woman to do any number of things to benefit YOU that she would not likely otherwise do on her own. People who see "pimp" as a term of endearment, would mostly disagree, accept for the wanna-be's who think they are pimpin if they can get their girl to buy them a double whopper with cheese.

In the United States and abroad there are many definitions of exactly what a pimp is. Among white persons they may look to the dictionary. Among ethnics we may rely upon the street slangs with a added spin. During the 1970's there were Blaxploitation films that assisted in curating these images. Of African american males or what the term by the late great comic Richard Pryor as 'Negro'/Pimp Daddy'. Into a hambone wearing flashy hat-suit wearing- 18k rings,  while driving cadillacs w/ white wall tires,rimms. In other films some pimps were seen as vicious,violent and over zealous slave drivers. Who would con young runaways at the local GreyHound bus stations in big cities as NYC or Hollywood. Before she knew it she was snookered into turning tricks on local strips or else! If she didn't make her quota she would be beaten and couldn't come home. I know this because I have a client living in Germany who worked as a journalist for Playboy in the 1970's. He did a extended interview with a group of famous pimps from D.C,Oakland,Calif,NYC and Las Vegas in the 1970's. Google pimps and that should assist you in filling up your curiosity...good luck..
