To me, "hooker" as a word connotes the girl on the street pulling tricks in an alley. "Provider" and "escort" and maybe even "courtesan" are much more sophisticated, and suggest something much more mutual and acceptable.

Prostitute and prostitution have far too many legal ramifications to even discuss...

I do not look at providers with anything less than fondness, respect, and a deep appreciation for making themselves available to me. Life is too short to spend it unhappy and unsatisfied.

If those words are used to discribe someone's job choice like "He is a cop, she is a hooker and she is a lawyer," that doesn't offend me. Nor does it offend me in sex talk like, "Your my dirty little prostitute aren't ya? Let me spank you." But when used to dismiss or dehumanize some one like, "You can't rape a hooker." "She is just a street whore" or the god awful dead hooker jokes I have heard. That pisses me off. In my book usage is everything.

One thing you got to remember is because some use those words to devalue people some will get defensive about the words, simular to the "N" word discribing a person of African decent. I personally think that is nuts. Best to humanize the words instead of giving power to them.

I tend to use the term provider or escort when talking with a member of that profession, unless/until I know whether she prefers a specific term, or doesn't care one way or the other.  I know some providers who don't like being called hooker or prostitute. I know others who don't think of themselves that way but would just laugh if I called them that - and maybe slap me upside the head as they were laughing.

So, it depends on the context and intent of the person who is using the word.

A term that puts another person down, that is derogatory or demeaning or implies lack of respect is offensive to me.  On the other hand, a term that shows respect or even mutually acceptable humor in the context in which it is used is fine.  
To paraphrase Jelloman,   I do not look at providers with anything less than fondness and  respect for who they are as people, and a deep appreciation for making themselves available as my partners in sex play.

I like to think of myself as a "fallen woman" lol

Perhaps he associates that word only with streetwalkers (some folks do) and/or the seedier side of this little world.

Or maybe, like me,  he has a bad memory attached to that word.   When I've asked people not to use that word, they get really condescending and sarcastically say, "oh you think you're not a hooker?  What do you call yourself, then?"    

Then I calmly explain that I'm not saying I'm NOT a "hooker"; prostitute, lady-of-the-evening, whore, escort, hooker, etc etc etc are all synonyms.   They mean the same damn thing.    

I just don't like to hear that word because no matter how many times I hear it, it still triggers a bad memory.  

Oh, and I really do like the term "fallen woman" because it just sounds so melodramatic that it makes me smile.

Does anyone recall the old yarn about two professors walking down the street, spying two "ladies of the evening," and then challenging each other to see who could come up with the most additional descriptions?

Here are the ones I remember:  "A pride of loins";" "a verse of pro's"; and "a flourish of strumpets."  There were more in a similar vein, but that's what I recall.

As SLUT lol but hooker,  whore and even horned up little bitch really don't offend me at all. I really don't mind if a gentleman wants to say those while his cock is in me either.  

The term "Hooker" was a slang name given to the prostitutes who followed the Union Army in the Civil War, and in particular to soldiers under General Hooker's command.  

I love history, but not in the bedroom, so provider/escort/courtesan are much more classy terms.
