A question for providers.  What would you say is the average age of hobyists?

Review the "past surveys" section here at TER. There is a survey, responded to by hobbyists, that should give you a pretty good answer to your question.

The "Age" thing is one of the first survey questions....

Looks like the average age is between 31-40.  It follows the bell curve almost precisely.

"mind over matter."  Once you lose your mind, it doesn't matter.
