i can only speak for myself, but there is usually a small period of time, that i use to actually speak to my clients.  it is why my hour is actually 75 minutes.  lol  anyway, i enjoy a small window of opportunity to a) feel him out and establish that he is/isnt sasfe to continue on the date b) just talk and get a vibe about what he might be the best way to make the session enjoyable for him.   there have been times when that time was a little awkward and thus, the only thing we have in common so far is this hobby.  there have been plenty of times when names have come up, but it doesnt take much to steer clear of what is just gossip.  there have been times whenever the information shared between us has benefitted both of us as talk of le is usually forbidden on any open boards, etc...  either i was able to educate him on something that is happening in the community or visa versa.

dont stop talking to your clients, but do use the time to say things that dont get to be said via pm's or texts.  this is the only personal time you have, so use it wisely.

I can't explain why taking bids like that is harmful or what ramifications could result, but it just seems like a classless way to preface an encounter. If you want the cheapest provider in town, it shouldn't be hard to find her number.
