I'm curious. Who reads these boards? I always assume it's guys from LA or NY but I'm sure there must be readers nationally and even internationally.

Everyone care to do a brief demographic, men and ladies.

Age/Sex/Location/approx # of times you hobby per year

35/F/LA&Vegas/as much as possible

How about you?

Heather, you crack me up. I guess I'm just as curious so why not step forward.

So why does 20-30 not seem like enough?

Heather, I find it interesting that you bring up this question at this time.
I have just recently corresponded with a couple of ladies who posted that they would like to travel, and both were quite surprised when I emailed them to suggest doing tour dates here in the "Heartland". We actually have a pretty active hobby community around here; then again what else do we have to do in the middle of cow country.

The How much do you spend per month has changed considerably since 2000-2001. Men were dropping an average of 1,000-2,500 a month on seeing providers. But things have changed as people are more budget conscious, having less discretionary income than in the dot.com and stock market boom era. A few have gone to once or twice a year with more substantial bookings like dinner dates instead of the hourly dates. Doing 2 dinner dates a year and seeing 1-4 lower-mid rate providers between those seems to be more common.

Younger hobbyists want to see more providers for the least amount of money each he can find. Older hobbyists want more memorable experiences, longer dates with more build.

The thing that has changed is the travel or short notice business. Since everyone is planning their hobbying these days, if you take a short notice trip to a particular city and run a post, by the time you are there, guys have just about seen your post and they don't have the money set aside. Guys now need lead time to set aside $300-$500 bucks when this used to be lunch money.

And with local providers offering specials to drive business, it's hard to compete with $$ hourly when you have to include flights, hotel, rental car, gas, food in your booking fee. Guys wonder why traveling providers can't charge market for their city but it still cost me money to get there.

It would be interesting to do that same survey specifically for the Bay area as that scene has changed considerably. You can find a provider whose fee is $60-150 bucks an hour in a city where a 1br apartment in sf, san jose or sunnyvale is going to run you $2500. I still haven't figured out that market.

that reduces the discretionary income of many hobbyists up north.  I am known friends in the BayArea who could barely pay their mortgage/rent even though interest rate had been falling and rent reduced.

Compare to other major metro area, LA is still relatively cheap to live as it has many different neighborhoods.  Hence the slow steady rise in donation rate.

Yes, but how can your average provider afford to live there now? The dropping of rates after the dotcom shattering looked like a manic scramble and I'm saying my gosh, how low are these girls going to go to compete with each other. But they went lower and lower to the point where a guy can get a GFE for a pair of Nikes.
