Do you beleive that???

North and West Africa one in three people. A third of the population? 40,000 NEW CASES PER YEAR IN THE USA. A City the size of Santa Maria infected every year. Still the most suseptable are IV drug users. Fuckin' drugs...

How many of your family members has HIV/AIDS?
How about co-workers?
Friends?
Neighbors?

Know what you can do to minimize risks. If you're gonna play, at least know the rules!

I know. It scares me to think about what risks I put myself in through pursuing this hobby. Maybe I'll just collect stamps from now on...

This part of the world has been an AIDS disaster for a dozen years, and getting worse.

To keep perspective on the gross numbers in America, however, you have to remember that the risk is not evenly distributed throughout the population, but still highly concentrated in certain areas.  Places like the South Bronx, where IV drug abusers abound, have shockingly high rates of HIV (well into double digits), and everyone knows about the higher incidence among the gay community.

But even looking at just the gross numbers, 40,000 new cases/yr. is about 1.5 people in 10,000 on a national average.  Move away from the high risk group and you can start adding many zeros to that number.  Practice safe sex and the risk becomes extremely small- it never goes away, but it becomes statistically far less than many of the other urban risks such as robbery, rape, traffic accidents, gang shooting- all of which can be fatal.

Again, to keep it in perspective, about the same 40,000 number of people die in traffic accidents each year.  You have a FAR better chance of personally controlling the factors leading to exposure to AIDS than you do those leading to a traffic fatality.  Yet you continue to drive your car every day- ARE YOU INSANE????
