To keep perspective on the gross numbers in America, however, you have to remember that the risk is not evenly distributed throughout the population, but still highly concentrated in certain areas. Practice safe sex and the risk becomes extremely small- it never goes away, but it becomes statistically far less than many of the other urban risks such as robbery, rape, traffic accidents, gang shooting- all of which can be fatal.
Again, to keep it in perspective, about the same 40,000 number of people die in traffic accidents each year. You have a FAR better chance of personally controlling the factors leading to exposure to AIDS than you do those leading to a traffic fatality.
