Private Mail sent to basic members

It is my understanding that basic members cannot access Private Mail. A VIP member can send private mail to a basic member but they cannot access the mail. I have no problem with this, it's just one more reason to establish VIP member status. However, under the current setup, when a VIP member sends private mail, they have no way of knowing whether the recipient has access to it.

Possible solutions

1. A return receipt option so that the sender may know if/when the private mail was read.

2. A bounce system that returns undeliverable private mail back to the sender.

I stated in my original post that I understand why access to Private Mail is a valuable incentive for Basic members to upgrade. However, from the point of view of the VIP member, Private Mail has less value if the VIP doesn't know if the intended recipient will ever see it.

How about something simple like having a different color mail icon or a different a text color to reflect membership status.  Private Mail would still provide an incentive for basic members to upgrade. Yet upgraded members would not waste their time waiting for a reply to a message that was never received.

I'm not suggesting giving everyone access to the Private Mail feature. However the enhancement suggested above would make PM a more valuable tool for VIP members and, therefore, provide an additional incentive to upgrade.

Part of the problem with that, believe it or not, is discrimination.  In the past we have had problems with VIP's and Non-VIP's having issues.  I don't want people to be able to tell who is and who is not VIP.

once again, if PM access is viewed as an  incentive to upgrade from a basic membership...

I go back to my original suggestion, to make PM a more effective tool for VIP's, consider the following...

1. A return receipt option so that the sender may know if/when the private mail was read.

2. A bounce system that returns undeliverable private mail back to the sender.

This would not create issues between basic and VIP members as a visible designator might, but it will make PM a more reliable tool rather than the "shot in the dark" that it is sometimes now.

i think its fair to everyone...  i know how bummed i feel when i dont get a reply back... and personally, it would be extra special usefull on the provider board, where thats how GND is telling us how to communicate, anyway.
thanks for letting me put in my .02
