I know it's been suggested before, but it really would be a productive move if there was a way to tell whether or not people can receive PM's. How many PM's are out there in the never-never-land, simply because we don't know if the intended targets will ever get our messages.

My point is that we are sending PM's not knowing whether they have VIP or not. It would be nice to know.

And "they get them" doesn't always work either. I recently let my VIP lapse for a few weeks. In all of that time, there was no little message that says "you have new mail". When I got my VIP back, I had two pages of PM's. It doesn't always work.

I thought that it was a carrot, gimmick to get people to try VIP access. A marketing tool.

I was surprised to learn that the non-VIPs don't even get a notice that they have unread PMs. It seems like a missed opportunity to induce users to try VIP.

and I'm sure it's true. I've seen countless posts that said, "Whoever sent me a PM" or something similar, but I never got those notices when my VIP ran out.

I also believe there will be mail changes on the new version of the site coming out soon. If they are not already slated to happen I will definitely suggest that these changes are made regarding read/unread mail and who you have replied to, etc.
