a counter?

Several times I've tried to post a message and it was rejected because I was over a 8,000 character limit.  

While I can be long-winded, I doubt very much I was anywhere near that limit [this was o the Politics Board].  and i've seen some phenomenally long posts which had to be well over 8,000 characters in length.
