I suggest that when basic hobbyist members upgrade to or accumulate VIP days, that they be notified via email when the clock will start.  After all, we are emailed when the clock stops.  From time to time I accrue days as a VIP by posting reviews and by reporting erroneous information in profiles, e.g., dead links, new phone numbers or email addresses.  However, I never know when my VIP status begins.  Given the nature of my work, etc., I have to be discrete as to where and when I logon to TER.  I can't keep checking every few hours.  I can't be certain whether my reviews will pass muster or my corrections will be accepted.  However, if I am notified when the clock starts ticking I can arrange my TER usage without exposing myself.  What do you think, TER?
