The inherent problem with the whole "steroid era" and the Hall of Fame, is that baseball writers are now making judgement calls on who allegedly used PED's and who did not. NO ONE KNOWS. Each writer is simply voting on their gut suspicions which is wrong. We believe there is stronger evidence against Bonds/Sosa/Clemens, but no failed drug tests. In fact, both Bonds/Clemens were exonerated in legal proceedings. There were a few wisperings and innuendos here and there that perhaps Piazza and Bagwell used, but nothing was ever substantiated. So these two get swept up in the whole era and do not get into the Hall of Fame.
Conversely, there are no wisperings that players like Frank Thomas, Ken Griffey Jr, or Jeff Kent used PED's. Maybe they did. Some medical experts will argue that steroids could cause a body to break down. Maybe that's what happend to Griffey. Who knows. But why are some players getting a free pass and others are assumed guilty? There are no rules, only a bunch of writers doing what they feel like which makes the voting process extremely dangerous.
But the thing that is the most troublesome is that baseball looked the other way while all this was happening. They loved the McGwire/Sosa homerun chase. They loved Bonds pursuit of Aarons homerun records. Major league baseball was rolling in the money and nobody said anything. The commissioner did nothing. Teams did nothing. And all these players who now say "don't let the cheaters in the hall of fame" said nothing. They all gladly accepted the enormous amounts of money these so called cheaters were bringing into the game. Hey, Selig, why don't you give the money back if it was brought in by players who "cheated the game"? Right, not happening.
And now we are going to retroactively use the "moral" clause to say these guys cheated and do not deserve to be in the Hall of Fame? It doesnt work that way. Heck, Gaylord Perry admitted he cheated by scuffing the baseball. By all accounts Ty Cobb was a bastard/racist. Let's use the "moral clause" and kick them out of the Hall of Fame.
And who is to say that players in the 60's and 70's did not take PED's? Any sports fan knows that painkillers were rampant during that era....could those be considered PED's? They allowed a hurt player to go out and play. Seems to me that is the point of HGH, albeit a bit more direct.
I also have a HUGE beef with those writers who turned in blank ballots, thus diluting the votes that were cast. How do you not put Mike Piazza and Jeff Bagwell in the HOF? These were arguably the best players at their positions in there era. (OK, Piazza was a terrible catcher, but one of the best bats in baseball for his entire career).
