Did your selective memory forget that and who did choke? As is usual, you can't stay on topic re: Francona.
Francona doesn't deserve to be fired. He's proven to be a good manager and will be scooped up by another team as soon as he is not managing the Red Sox.
Since he went off topic, if your going to mention '78 and '86, then 2004 should be mentioned too. I think Sox fans harp on that since it was the first and only time in baseball history it happened, at the expense of the Yankees.
At least when you post about the Yankees, it's objective and makes sense.
ESPN is reporting that a decision will be made sometime today concerning Terry Francona. Rather than fire him outright, the team will decline his options for 2012 and 2013. There is another report that Francona doesn't want to come back, that he's had enough after 8 seasons. Either way, looks like he's gone.
I'm a Yankee fan, but blaming Francona is ludicrous. He pushed all the right buttons. It's not his fault Crawford dropped two catchable balls, and that Beckett, Lackey, Lester, Bard and Papelbon didn't make their pitches at crucial moments. This is more about differences in philosophy between Francona and Epstein (you know, the guy who signed Crawford and Lackey?). The fault is not really anyone's in "management." The guys on the field dropped the ball, literally and figuratively. It's so nice to see trouble, strife and angst in Red Sox Nation.
This 2011 Red Sox team is nothing like the ones who won two WS championships. This team showed no sense of urgency down the stretch. The clubhouse was not nearly as tight as the other teams. We put out a very ordinary lineup in the last week. Also, it could just be that our pitching staff isn't as good as we all thought it was. I'm a Sox fan here but making Tito the scapegoat is a bad decision. Unless of course he has had enough of the shenanigans of dealing with this club and the Boston media. Either way, Thanks for your efforts Terry.
I just think Sox fans make waaaaay too much of it, especially when you consider the Yanks' 27 WS titles and the many times the Sox choked in the past. Hard to compare one choke to another, but both the Yanks in '04 and the Sox in '11 were of historic proportions. But what matters most is the Yanks' 27 titles to the Sox 2 since 1918.
