I'm not a soccer fan, but saw this tidbit come across the wire while ago. General Bheki Cele, South Africa's police commissioner, said his job of providing security for next month's World Cup, will be made much easier if Team USA is knocked out early, the earlier the better. Cele said that a visit by Obama would present a monumental security challenge, and that the operations required would equal those of the 43 heads of state who have already confirmed their attendance. Nothing like a vote of confidence from the host country.
To me, it will be fascinating to see President Obama's involvement in the World Cup. As I remember, he committed a gaffe by not commenting on England playing Ukraine? At least he's honest -- he doesn't give a care about footie and isn't listening to handlers what to say about it.
I do remember when Team USA was involved in an important match (memory fails me at the moment) and President Bush called to congratulate the team. The message was "The president called!"
"The president of what?" (The understanding was perhaps the FIFA prez, or suchlike.) Shock resounded when it was revealed it was P. Bush.
Happy to see (even though you're not a soccer fan) a thread about the world game!
And lastly, it was disturbing to see South Africa finally try to do something about the shantytowns as they would be made visible on the world stage for 2010, as per a press release. Finally -- why not sooner? But at least the World Cup will bring many issues to light.
