and a bunch of people are yelling and screaming "why is this a story?!".  It's a story because of those people.  He's not throwing it in your face.  He just wants to be able to live his life out of the shadows.  And I commend him for that.  That was a ballsy thing to do.  I wish him the best.  I'm ashamed to be the same species as some of those who toss anger and bigotry at a man who just wants to be himself.  Someday, we will see each other as fellow humans, and nothing else.  Someday.

im happy he feels comfortable doing this, but I cant help but wish this was a bigger name player, not a 3rd stringer that has never made an impact. probably would have more impact if it was at least a starter caliber player, if not an all out star

that would really be a story! The recent arrest of an  NFL linebacker  was an interesting read. And the other arrests of pro athletes, always cause me to chuckle.   The use of BP and other very risky venues by pro athletes, without any research,  always amazes me

It's not like he really has much to risk at this stage in his career, quite the contrary to tell the truth. He may have actually extended his career by a year or two by coming out.

Hopefully in a few years "coming out" will not be newsworthy. Gays are already out in almost every other segment of 21st century life, as they should be, hopefully the next several hundred gay players can come out with no fear of damaging their careers.

Quite frankly I am sick of hearing about the "first black female gay this" or the "Second Mexican American" to do that or the "Fourteenth Asian American lesbian" to win whatever the fuck he or she has accomplished. I live pretty much color blind and to me it's so overblown that it cheapens the accomplishment itself IMO.

As for Jason Collins, yes I am glad he came out out, yes it will make it easier for other athletes to come out as well, but aside from that, I don't really much care to tell the truth.

as long as ESPN is around, that is. Also, if Collins doesn't wind up on a team next season, I wonder how long it will be before a special interest group yells "discrimination."

Very valid point though. The oil patch,  just like pro sports, is not very receptive to the gay lifestyle, I mean they don't even like people of color or with slanted eyes by and large, but they have to put up with me because I write their paychecks, so they don't dare give me shit. but openly gay roustabouts or rig workers? Not many that I can think of.

I know that a lot of high-profile actors, athletes, and other guys of the like see working girls because of the guarantee of no-strings-attached, discreet fun. The providers are a lot more valuable than the obvious benefits to having them around...
