Persistence pays off..

Sergio's problem is that the media anointed him "great" when he really wasn't. We all remember Sergio as a 19 year at the 1999 PGA, going shot for shot with Tiger, ultimately loosing by a stroke.  The media pundits predicted that this was just the start of a 15 year run where Sergio/Tiger would compete/dominate the majors. Well obviously, Tiger proved to be an immortal, and Sergio proved that he was no where near competing on that level. That tournament heaped way too much pressure and undue burden on him. Sergio wasn't able to overcome the expectations of not living up to what everyone felt should have be a dominant career with multiple majors in his pocket.

He's had a very good career.. multi time winner on tour and has performed great at the Ryder Cup. It may not have been the career that everyone expected, but it is what it is. Mickelson didn't win his first major until 34...so there is still time for Sergio to go on a major title run.
