Most books have a bet where you get Tiger....or everyone else.
It you play this stupid game, you know how hard it is have your best game "appear" when necessary. How could Tiger be favored over the rest of the field?
While Tiger is the odds on favorite (-130) the field bet is not on every other golfer besides Tiger. The field bet is +250 and it includes every other golfer besides the top 45 including Tiger, Lefty etc. BTW Lefty is second choice at +650 everyone else is well over ten to one.
My online book must have great odds, because Tiger was +140. The field (what was left after the 50 or so guys listed) was paying +500. To put it into perspective, Lefty was the second highest favorite at +700.
My picks -- and I put a little on them -- were Gay and O Hair. Unfortunately, I have no money in my online book, so I had my brother place the bets in Vegas. I'm thinking I got them at about 1/5 of what my book had them at!
In some sports there is a huge disparity in the betting lines. I used to keep money in a dozen different off shore books besides betting with my local guy to take advantage of the different spreads.
A person with the time and the resources could make a living by arbitraging the lines. The only problem is the books don't like to lose. I have been shut off by some books for winning as little as 20-30k, so the chances of making any real money by arbitraging betting lines are slim. It is an interesting excersise however.
My book was similar to your's on the Lefty line, I think he was +650 on mine, but your odds on Tiger and the field were much, much better. I might have been tempted to take Tiger at +140, at less than even money however, not a chance am I going to lay odds.
