if you're only taking top 4 from each new conference, there will be some teams at 5 or 6 with more points than teams qualifying in other conferences. i realize it is to help out teams and their travel in the west. it will also get back to more regional based rivalries in each conference. I just hope they use the names of past greats Howe, Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux for the new conferences
like that. last year the rangers made the 8th spot in the east with 93 pts and in the west Dallas -95 pts and Calgary - 94 pts missed the cut.

some friends a little closer to the game told me this has been Gary Bettman's plan all along. he wants to go to 32 teams. the two open spots in the east are there for a reason and he took over the coyotes to keep them alive so the NHL would have full coverage in the west. he wouldn't support atlanta as it was in the same way because they were too much of a mess to deal with. they said the Quebec Nordiques will probably be back in as little as two years and believe it or not they are saying atlanta could be the 32nd team in as little as 3 years when a real ownership group is put together. Even super creep Don Wadell has made similar comments in the past month.
