Did you see the story about this? Johnson, who is a USC running back, was lifting weights when one fell on his throat. He has a crushed larynx and neck, according to Yahoo Sports, and will probably miss the rest of the season. But, the good news is that he will most likely make a full recovery. I thought these guys were supposed to use spotters wehn they were lifting. He's lucky he wasn't killed.
I was reported that he was being spotted by an asst coach.
After the 7 hour surgery, his prognosis is good for his ability to speak again. As for football.........? He should qualify for a medical redshirt this season.
to catch a barbell as it's slipping. But luckily he was there to immediately get the weights off Johnson before any further damage occurred. Spotters can prevent some injuries, but preventing injuries from being debilitating is their real function. Back in the day I once saw about 4 spotters on a guy on a trampoline, but they simply couldn't react fast enough when he missed a flip and damn near cracked his skull open. He landed in a heap on a mat on the floor, but had he landed on the floor itself, it would have been real ugly. They no longer have the trampoline as a gymnastic event, and it's not hard to see why.
I was thinking the same thing myself as I'm a trainer and weight lifter myself. Unless he told the spotter it was slipping, they didn't have a prayer, so to speak. Don't think I've ever seen someone's hand slip on a bar while doing the bench press but anything's possible. Hope he has a speedy recovery and thank goodness he's gonna be ok!
