And so Boston begins its march to their 18th NBA World Championship with our 21st appearance in the Finals.
Think about it folks, 17 Championships in 20 tries. Now what other franchise in any sport on any planet has that kind of winning percentage in number of attempts.
Tonight the Boston fan began a now familiar BEAT LA chant. But what everyone failed to point out is that the BEAT LA chant started, not with a Celtic win to get into the finals or even a Celtic victory over the Lakers.
The BEAT LA chant began on a Sunday afternoon in May 1982 with about 26 seconds left in game 7 of the 1982 Eastern Conference Series between Boston and the Philadelphia 76er in the old Boston Garden. Philadelphia had the best record in the NBA in the 1981-82 season. Philly was a team with Dr J, Charles Barkley, Andrew Tony and Darrel Dawkins.
Boston was still stacked with Bird, McHale, Parrish, but they had injuries and didn't have the horses to overcome Philly in the 7th and deciding game in the old Boston Garden.
With 26 seconds left on the clock and their home team down 117-105 the Boston crowd spontaneously burst into a chant BEAT LA - BEAT LA. Not because they were going to the finals to face the LA Fakers. No, because the Boston fans recognized that they weren't going to make it against the LA but if Philly was going to the be the team out of the east, they had a duty to BEAT LA.
I've always felt it was one of the greatest moments in Boston Celtics history. The 76er were a fiercely hated team by the Celtic going back to the days of Russell vs Chamberlain. They played each other 8 or 10 times a year. But no matter what or who they were. If they were going to do battle against the west and LA was western champs, then all Boston cared about was one thing.
BEAT LA - BEAT LA - BEAT LA
For the record, Philly lost to LA in 6 and Boston had to wait till the 1984 finals and BEAT LA in 7 games in Boston. But thats another story for another day.
BEAT LA _ BEAT LA _ BEAT LA _ BEAT LA!!!!!!

Then I may cheer for Phoenix. Steve Nash is a class act and if he can lead the suns to a Championship (Over my beloved Celtics) then I can live with that.
BTW Charles Barkley was not on that championship team. Moses Malone was the star along with Dr. J. Barkley, although in the Hall of Fame, never won a championship.
With that said. All I got to say to the Lakers and their bandwagon riders. CRASH AND BURN!
except for all our success!
I take umbrage at the "bandwagon" comment that pervades most comments about Laker fans. I have been on that bandwagon since the 60's with Goodrich, West, Baylor etc. Some of those comments come from people that have not been alive that long.
Yeah, there are a lot of fans that jump on with a winning team. Happens in every sport.
"Beat LA" is actually a helluva compliment. Our winning franchises inspire the rest of the country to gang up and berate our teams. No problem. All taken in the spirit in which it was intended. ![]()
Not to discount the Suns but I am REALLY looking forward to another Laker/Celtic matchup. Nothing like beating the Boys from Beantown for another title!
Current Score: Lakers 30 Finals appearances with 15 Titles. Celtics: 20 Finals with 17 Titles. Both damn impressive but we are gainin' on ya!
Thank you 808, I stand corrected on Barkley, he was still at Auburn.
Moses Malone! Don't get me started on Moses Malone!!! How is it that guy never fouled out of game? Almost never fouled out. I think the refs were afraid of him. He was one scary guy.
That would be win-win for me. If the Celtics lose, I get $100. If they win, that will be the happiest $100 I ever spent!
I still am surprised by how Orlando played this series, but the Celtics did just about everything right, other than game 5. And as much as I would KILL to see a Suns-Celtics series (as they are my two favorite teams), that little sneaker by Ron-Ron the other night was a perfect reminder of why the Lakers are the defending champs and the favorites for a repeat. They find a way to get it done. I had said Lakers over Suns in five, six if the Suns are lucky. I think I could be right, but again, would be happy to be wrong, whether it is seven games of a Suns series victory...but I sure am not counting on it.
Just kiddin' ya, SD
On paper, you are correct. The Lakers appear to be the better team.....but that's why they play the games!
Truth be told, the ONLY team I did not want in the finals was the Celtics. The Lakers match up well against all the Eastern contenders except the Celts.
So, the part of me that wants a title was rooting for the Magic. The part that wants to see a classic rivalry renewed was glad for a Celtic victory.
And no, I am not overlooking the Suns. Yes, I think LA will beat them but it ain't over yet. The Fat Lady is only humming.....
Sorry MSD
No I won't take your $100. Bad things happen when I bet on the home team. Did it for the 2008 Super Bowl, got crushed, did it game 7 ACLS in 2003, that had disastrous results.
As strongly as I know you're wrong, I'm not fucking with the Leprechaun.
Truth is, the Celtics want the Lakers because they know, yes know to a man, they can beat them. But the Suns, they don't want any part of the Suns. THe Suns beat them pretty good both times they played this year. They don't play against a quality team with a point guard like Steve Nash. He drives them crazy.
Have the Lakers played against a "good" defense in the West? Come on, be honest. They'll have to beat a "GREAT" defense as well as play with a team in transition in the Celtics.
Just remember how confident all the media pundits and arm chair prognosticators were in 2008. If I remember correctly that didn't turn out so good for the Fakers. Two of the games were probably the most embarrassing moments in the franchise history.
What it all boils down to is; who is healthiest? If Rondo goes down or Rasheed's back acts up or Garnet gets hobbled then it will a sad 5 or 6 games series. The Celtics bench isn't as deep as the Lakers.
If the Celtics continue to play smart and without injuries they could take the Lakers in 4. But realistically I think it goes 7 with the boys in green taking it to 7 games, much like cat toys with a mouse before biting its head off, There will be another celebration on the parquet floor.
Did you all see Dave Cowens hand the Eastern Conf trophy over to winners last night? Now that was some gritty, hard working red head if there ever was one.
Let the games begin!
oh wait, they have to finish first.

The Celtics may win but I believe it will be a hard fought series (I know, if the Fakers even get there)
You are 100% wrong about one prediction. The Celtics WILL NOT win game 7 on any parquet floor. Game 7 would be fiercely contested....at the Staples Center.
What I said was about winning percentage in a championship series. I said....
"Think about it folks, 17 Championships in 20 tries. Now what other franchise in any sport on any planet has that kind of winning percentage in number of attempts. "
The Yankees have been in 40 World Series winning 27. Thats a winning percentage of 67.5%
The Celtics have been in 20 NBA Finals and won 17. Thats a winning percentage of 85%.
Now I might not be the sharpest tool in the shed but I do know 85% is A LOT better than 67.5%.
Even if I adjust for the difference in the # of seasons played by the Yankees vs the # of seasons played by the Celtics
Yankees have won 27 of 40 attempts in 105 seasons. Thats 25.7% of the time the yankees win the WS.
The Celtic have won 17 of 20 attempts in 62 seasons.
That means the Celtics have won 27.4% of the time.
No matter how you cut it or try to spin it, the Celtics performance in the finals is nothing shot of spectacular.
The past doesn't win you new championships thats why we get to enjoy the masters at work, slowly dismantling the Laker Fakers

Next 10 yrs how many championships the Yankees and celticscwill have, no contest, Yankees by landslide, Celtics are done after this year, I hate Lakers, but I hate Celticfan more, I hope Lakers DESTROY Boston, we love Los angeles
