because his transgression took place when he was a manager. The guys who should be forever banned are those from the Steroid Era, like McGuire, Sosa and Bonds. And, I guess, A-Rod.

What a terrific ball player. Too bad he harmed his reputation by betting on his team. Should he be allowed into the Hall Of Fame now?
I think so.

Kinda chap ass for me.
If he would have done the Mickey Mantel thing and admit he was an addict then he'd be in the HOF, I say.
But him being unapologetic hurt him.
Story I have.
He was always in Vegas doing autograph signings. First time I realize he was an asshole was when he had a booth by the M&M store on the strip. My wife thought the store was cool, so she wanted a picture. We took the picture but a part of Rose got in, no biggie you'd think. But he got pissed and said something to me. I told him we wanted the store and not some "Has been"...he said something but I ignored it.
Then years later I saw him, alone sitting on a table outside the Field of Dreams memorabilia store in the Forum Shopping Center at Caesars. He looked sad, and kinda pathetic. No one ask or look interested in a signing.
But here's the kicker. I have a sports room/den filled with autograph jerseys and classic pictures. Its the talk when my friends come over. My brother inlaw who was a huge Pete Rose fan got me a signed Pete Rose Reds jersey. He though it'd look cool in there. Me not being a great fans of his wasn't about to take down my signed picture of 1968 Denny McLain for a Pete Rose jersey...C'mon..31-6...No one will top 30 wins as a pitcher....AGAIN!

Denny McLain - 1968, a great year!  Who knew that there would never be another 30 game winner?  Or will there be ...?
.
Denny McLain only had 10 yrs in The Bigs. Despite 2 Cy Youngs and a WS Championship I don't think his career stats earned him a place in the Hall of Fame. ... Also, McLain had some accusations of gambling and "other stuff" going on.  When did MLB make changes in the mound height and other rules that favored the pitchers? (Changed the ball specs; raised the mound 6" then they lowered it by 6" ... I forget all the changes and the years they were made. Was '68 a "favored the pitcher" year?)
.
"Charlie Hustle" Rose is one of the greatest players in baseball history. I remember a story about Game 6 of the 1975 World Series. The Red Sox tied the game in the bottom of the 8th. In the 11th, Rose got to first base by a HBP. I think it was at that point that Rose said to the Red Sox first baseman (Yastrzemski? Or was Yaz moved around at that point?) that, 'No matter who wins, this is going to be remembered as one of the greatest games in baseball history.' So far, Rose was right! Game 6, WS 1975 has been on most Top # lists every year since. (Maybe Rose said it to Fisk or someone else during an inning change, but it was DEFINITELY before Fisk's historic walk-off homer in the 12th.)
.
There are already a lot of "damaged" players in the HoF. Their foibles were overshadowed by their baseball prowess and then overlooked by HoF electors. For that reason, I think that Rose SHOULD be in the HoF. In addition, the prejudices of Commissioner Giamatti worked against Rose.

Pete Rose was one of the greatest baseball players ever. However, he was an a hole who was once disrespectful to my mom.  He had an out side child here in Tampa, whom he paid little attention too. I thought his taking out Ray Fosse at home and ruining his career was a chicken shit move and totally unnecessary. Now that he is dead, I'm all for his being in the HOF.  I saw him at the shop where he hung out signing autographs in Vegas and walked on by saying nothing. He looked surprised and I smiled and walked on. A great and a jerk     too bad.
