Back in the 80s he was one of the best MLB umpires. He was shot in a restaurant parking lot in Dallas after a game while helping 2 waitresses who were being robbed.  

Paralyzed and told he'd never walk again. He was able to walk again with a cane, but not umpire. At the age of 67.
