Saturday at the Open should be interesting. Will Tiger continue to play well, or will Toms or Furyk win another Major. Anyway you slice it, I bet the suits at NBC are jumping up and down for joy that Tigers in the thick of things. It'll be interesting to see if anyone is under par by Sunday.

Not too many of us had Webb Simpson in the office US Open pool (heck, not too many of us, Hardy included, had even heard of Simpson prior to Sunday). It's what makes the majors in golf great to watch. You could write down 50-100 names at the start of the tournament and there is a good chance in many cases you wouldn't have written down the winner.
Conversely, you could write down 4-5 names in tennis and there is an almost certainty that one of them will win the tournament. The sport is so top heavy (a few players simply are better than everyone else) that at the end of the day, the same people win. You would never have a player of Webb Simpson's ranking win a major tennis tournament. Not a chance.
Thur and Fri the USGA saw everyone including Tiger was hitting a lot of long irons and running down fast fairways to get within a short iron of the greens.
They softened the course to stop the fast fairways and force drivers. Remember they want a complete player winning. This wasn't a PGA event but a USGA event. They don't cater to a single player. Someone who can hit all shots and all clubs, just not a Tiger (hard long iron and short iron) or a Bubba (big drive and wedge). Tiger stayed with his "Stinger from the tee" and Sat and Sunday he couldn't get close enough with slower fairways to make a birdie putt. He also couldn't hit the drive.
I don't think Tiger has a good chance at another Major. He can get hot for one or two rounds but four rounds. I don't think so. Odds are even less for Phil. I really don't think Bubba has much of chance except at the Masters. That big drive can work there but at the other majors not so much.
A lot of Opens are won with just par. That's their goal. Hit it down the fairway, center of the green and two put. However, you will make bogies so you need a few birdies to offset your bad holes.
A personal note:
The first time I played the Olympic Club I was on the first tee and we were making up the game and bets for the day. A member said; "I bet you $100 you can't break 80." (I was a 4 handicap at the time.) I said Yea, I can break 80, I don't want to take your money, not a fair bet. The members goaded me into taking the bet.
I shot a smooth, walk in the park, no sweet 87. The members were laughing their ass off on the 18th green. But as it turns out they wouldn't take the $100. Said it was a club joke for first time players at the club. Took me to clubhouse and bought me dinner. Everyone in the grill knew what had happened and boy did they have fun with it. I was 15 at the time. Over the years I played it 20, 25 times and loved it and the members. I could always got a tee time and a good game with a few members.
I have played a lot of different courses. Nothing as good as the Olympic Club. And it is one tough course.
