I wish ALL the stadiums would do this. The games would be much more enjoyable, particularly in New York! Indeed, I stopped going to the NFL games because of all the drunks in the stands. I only go to college games now (basically Big Ten games) because there's no drinking (beer) in the stadiums. The crowds are MUCH better behaved, and it's a pleasure to see games there.
It would be the same problem that the airlines are currently facing. You can't give a customer something for free over many many years (i.e. checked bags, food, etc.) and then try and take it a way by charging for the service. It generates a huge back-lash and negative publicity. People now resent the airlines and as a result fly less. In turn, the airlines are struggling for revenue and as such charge more for services that were once free. The cycle continues.
Besides the fact that beer sales represent a huge money maker for NFL teams, I don't see them ever taking it away on a permanent basis. It's tough to punish 65,000 people who can drink responsibly and don't cause any trouble for the actions of a few hundred drunks around the stadium. There would be a great public uproar and backlash.
Also, a large part of the poor behavior at NFL games is precipitated by the hours and hours of tailgating. I can’t tell you how many times I've witnessed people completely smashed and or even vomiting walking into the stadium before the game. Come on, you pay a hundred dollars for a ticket so you can be sick during the game? Ridiculous.
I am surprised that the Jets are not selling beer at the game (at least through the first half). I guess they figure people will be drinking all day (as it’s an 8:30 start) in anticipation....of course here in lies the problem
go to Big Ten games with no beer sales and no complaints. If truth be told, I seriously doubt if there would be any public uproar or backlash if beer sales were eliminated from NFL games. As for getting drunk at tailgates, no tailgate at any NFL game could possibly compare to the size of the tailgates at some Big Ten games. Again, hardly ever is anyone drunk at a Big Ten game. In the few instances when they are, the crowd will cheer when stadium personnel remove them!
eliminated from NFL stadiums. When you're paying big bucks for tickets, you're paying to watch and enjoy a game. You're not paying that money for access to beer - you can get that in a bar for just the price of the beer!
I actually started going to the games at Shea with my father in the 70's. Jets fans are a different bread. The last game at shea was a nightmare in '83. tearing it down, fires, fights, destroying bathrooms, stalls. I never eperienced that kind of destruction and stupidity in my life. Riot police were giving people beat downs. NYPD Justice.
Stopping beer sales make it worse. I think Wild Turkey is the official drink of Jets fans. Those that want to cause trouble will just drink more in lot. Will get ugly if they lose. Many pissed off that they lost their season tickets due to the new stadium psl and ticket prices.
high IMHO, and I wouldn't pay those prices simply because I don't think it's worth it. But perhaps there is a silver lining in that it will keep a lot of those drunken yahoos away from the stadium!
