with interfering ownership of the Raiders. However, the Raiders of the 60 and 70 had some pretty damn good teams, even if they were thought of as borderline dirty players. At least that's how they were preceived in KC.
To be fair and balanced here I also think Lamar Hunt had a lot to do with the creation of the NFL/AFL merger. He quitely did a lot of the heavy lifting behind the scene and had more respect with the NFL owners.
Yahoo! Sports has reported that Oakland Raiders' owner Al Davis has passed away at age 82. No further details were given. Not much was heard from him for the past few months, so it was very likely that his health has been on the downslide. Davis was one of the greatest offensive minds in the 60's and 70's, building his team around players such as Darryl Lamonica, Cliff Branch and Fred Biletnikoff.
To football fans 35 and younger, all they will remember of Al Davis is that he was an arrogant old malcontent who had no football sense in terms of drafting or signing free agents, who fired coach after coach after coach because they disagreed with his footbal philosophy. His public trirade over Lane Kiffins apparent insubordination a few years back showed Davis to be a downright baffoon.
But, in his day, I am not sure there was a more brilliant football mind than Al Davis. He built the Raiders into a super franchise in the late 60's-early 80's. They had a swagger and confidence about them that was rarely matched. He was largely responsible for the AFL/NFL merger. He truly understood the marketing of football and how to bring the NFL to the fans.
Yes, the game in recent years had certainly passed him by and his stubborness to give up the football control of the Raiders has greatly contributed to their current demise. But hopefully people will remember Davis for what he was and what he did for the league, not what he had recently become.
