While the Yankee offer of 3 Years at $45 million dollars is certainly fair and well above market value, by telling Jeter to "go test the free agent market" they have essentially backed him into a corner. The Yankees know that no team is going to pay Jeter more than their offer (why would they; Jeter's value to any other team is as a 36 year old shortstop with declining skills), so they can sit back and wait. So what is Jeter supposed to do? Crawl back to the Yankees and now accept their offer after he and is agent essentially said that the Yankee offer was ridiculously low? That would look horrible for both sides. The Yankees need Jeter if not only for the Public relations aspect (His pursuit of 3000 hits, Yankee-Ographies, an ambassador to the organization, Hall of Famer and ultimately a spot in monument park) and Jeter needs the Yankees as he wants to play for one team his whole career and he knows at the end of the Day the Yankees will pay him by far the most. I suspect both sides ultimately move a bit: The Yankees up their offer to around 17 million per year for three years with perhaps a club option (w/ a buyout) for a 4th year, and Jeter will have to recognize his declining skills and advanced age and come down from his 5 year 100 million dollar reported demands. My prediction is that it will somehow get done.
But it is amazing that for a team that has thrown millions of dollars at unproductiive players (recently Key Igawa, Carl Pavano, and right now you'd have to say AJ Burnett) they are now playing financial hard ball with a Yankee legend in Jeter.
He won a Gold Glove with the best fielding percentage and fewest errors of any full-time shortstop in the league. He sure did have an off-year at the plate, but he still managed .270, 10 dings, 67 ribbies, 18 steals, 111 runs scored, and 30 doubles. Those numbers put him in the upper third of all shortstops. There's no reason to think he won't have a better year in 2011. A team that tries to publicly embarass him over money doesn't deserve him.
110 runs, 270 average un impressive, with his attutude I wouldnt take, him back if he was on an average team he would have no rings, no gold glove and not that many runs scored, please 18 SB wow I am impressed, who agrees with me, I dont know why they are playing hard ball with mariano that is the no brainer, u give jeter 3 yrs, u cant give mariano 2 yrs, hope andy comes back, posada and ,jeter done.

with a full deck inside his brain. 25 million a year clearly someone has lost his mental marbles.
I can name three ex-Yankees who were ten times better inside and outside the ballpark than mister Derek Jeter.
They are catcher Thurman Munson, 1st baseman Don Mattingly, and 1st baseman Tino Martinez all three were true Yankees and classy men compared to Derek Jeter.
Seasons, and played well in playoffs, after his big contract he only, won 1 championship, and that was, thanks to mr arod amazing playoffs, mariano was more hero in those finals than jeter, jeter averaged only 15 HR his whole career, is jeter worth 25 million a year.
I think both of you are basically right. The Yankees will move up a little to allow Jetter to save a little face and Jetter will not find the free market for his skills at the inflated level he currently thinks he worth.
Jetter need the Yankees more than they need him. If he did go with someone else it would be a second teir team, little chance of post season play, not much press for him outside of NY. And what second tier team would be willing to pay his demands just to have a player around for the drive to 3000 hits and a slice of Hall of Fame. It addition a player in the Hall of Fame who has played for only one team as opposed to several is a better sell as a legend, excluding pitchers.
