Of course, Alford is trying to concentrate on taking UCLA to the final 4...so its completely ridiculous to ask him now. But I would think he will be considered.
I didn't think Crean was horrible, but he prob. didn't meet the lofty (think Bob Knight success) expectations at Indiana. Will be hard for most coaches to reach the status of Knight at Indiana The problem with college basketball, is that it all boils down to a 6 game window in March. How you do during the regular season or how many conference titles you win is almost irrelevant. Many coaches (think Dean Smith and Coach K) were vilified before they could win. Heck, people wanted Jay Wright fired because he failed in the tournament (last year's win bought him another decade) And even if you win (think Denny Crum and his 6 final 4's and 2 NCAA Championships), if you don't maintain your success over the long haul, they'll run even the great ones out of town. College basketball is a brutal business.
Obviously, you know far better than I in terms of Crean's in game strategies and scheduling decisions...I don't follow Indiana basketball that closely, so have no basis to comment on those issues. I just know the success of Bob Knight will shadow the program until someone else approaches his level (like it will at Duke when Coach K leaves)
Indiana is till a top job...it may not be Duke, Kanas, NC or Kentucky, but its certainly in the next group. Great program. Great History. Marshall would have been an excellent choice. I also like Chris Mack, the current coach at Xavier.
