ESPN is reporting that New England and Minnesota are expected to complete a trade today that will send Randy Moss back to Minnesota. This will give Brett Favre the front-line receiver he's been missing all year. The Patriots evidently feel they don't need Moss anymore, as he had no catches Monday against Miami. Moss is in the final year of his contract and was vocal most of the summer about a new contract, or at least an extension. No further details of the trade were given.
As you alluded to, Minnesota is really struggling in the passing game. Without Rice and a banged up Harvin, the Vikings are in desperate need of someone to stretch the field. Otherwise, it is going to be tougher and tougher for Peterson (as good as he is) to run against 8 man fronts. They need to start throwing the ball better to take the pressure off the run game. Obviously with Favre back, the Vikings are making a Super Bowl run this year. Moss would certainly help as he is still in the upper echelon of deep threats in the league. I know the Vikings had interest in San Diego's Vincent Jackson but that deal hit a snag. Moss is a very solid option.
For the Patriots, the deal makes sense as well. Moss is in his last year of his contract and I don't think the Patriots have any intention of paying him what he thinks he is worth. Besides, the Patriots do not tolerate any players bemoaning their contracts or playing time, etc. Moss is prob. starting to wear out his welcome. Better for them to get draft picks today then loose him to free agency (and be awarded a lower compensatory picks as compensation). While it does weaken New England this year, it’s a deal they should make with an eye towards the future. Besides, as long as Brady is under center, he will find a way generate offense.
Oh, "cash for clunkers" Sorry, my ATF would take offence at that. But I do agree the Vickings are trying to salvage what may be shapping up as a bad year. I like Farve but he should have stayed retired for the good of the game. At 40 there is no real future in the game for him or his team and to put off a team rebuild one more year won't help.
I really hate to say this and certanily don't wish this to happen but I think the odds of a serious injury to Farve is to high.
